The non-D20 version, the first edition, is really good. I'd say this is definitely worth checking out: Deadlands - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Others I'd say are the old Palladium TMNT game is worth checking out, although you can run out of stuff to do quickly if you're GM isn't good: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia And also Marvel Superheroes: Marvel Super Heroes (role-playing game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia It was better randomly rolling for you character powers rather than assume a pre-made char from Marvel or create a character with powers you choose imo. Makes it more fun, and every character I created randomly still ended up with powers that complemented each other. Really old school but I had fun with it back in the day, Star Frontiers: Star Frontiers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Cyberpunk was also really fun, albeit hard to stay alive long, lol: Cyberpunk 2020 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia These are mostly older games, but hope they help.

Ahh, I've heard nothing but good things about Deadlands, but it's one of the few games I haven't really tried myself.
If you're looking for an oriental-flavored game that isn't quite as crazy over the top as Exalted, I cannot recommend Legend of the Five Rings (the RPG) highly enough. Fantastic setting and a great system. I just wish it would get more support, but the company that makes it is more into CCGs than RPGs. |

Deadlands (Classic) is an awesome system, if you want to do the fantrasy thing, I have heard that Earthdawn is a cool system and the core mechanics seem to be related to the old FASA Shadowrun stuff.
My Group has played quite a few game systems over the years, currently we play A modern Mage game using the World of Darkness storyteller system and Mage: the Awakening rules. And a Dark Fantasy game using the WoD system and some house rules. Other systems that are quite good are High Adventure Role Playing (HARP), Hackmaster by Kenzer & Co (the new edition is better but still rather thin on rules). If you are looking for a morer causla beer and pretzels experience the Descent: Journeys into the dark Boardgame and it's numerous expansions are quite excellent as well. Hope this helps! |

The RPG market is not doing terribly well, given that Wizards of the Coast has recently announced plans to drop the Star Wars RPG license; given how much business Hasbro (who owns WotC) does with Lucas otherwise, that isn't a good sign. That, and WotC is preparing to release its own Space Opera setting, Gamma World.
As for suggestions, I'd say it depends on where you fall on the Narrativist/Gamist/Simulationist spectrum. If you're a Narrativist, you simply cannot go wrong with Burning Wheel, which is truly a great storytelling game with fun, though at first complex, rules for combat. There is a fantastic "Duel of Wits" mechanic that turns what in D&D would be a simple die roll (roll Diplomacy/Bluff) to a full on mini-game with strategies, resource allocation, etc. Absolutely awesome. From a mixed Gamist/Narrativist perspective, "Carnage 3:16" can be either a single-shot board game OR a long running campaign style RPG that actually incorporates the idea of a character's story into the rules; stories you make up on the spot have direct impact on the mechanics of the game. If you're a Simulationist, and you like Westerns, go RIGHT NOW to this page and order this book. Yes, it's a steep price but well worth it. This game actually recreates gunfighting, knife fighting, prospecting, cattle driving, frontier justice, gambling, and every other "Western" style action you can imagine, using truly innovative mechanics. BTW, this whole Gamist/Narrativist/Simulationist thing, it's an idea that there are three general categories of RPG players. To be truly reductive and generalize, Gamists want to solve a problem, Narrativists want to tell a story, and Simulationists want a complex kind of realism/verisimilitude that is based on what is most probable within the setting. Of course, very few people fit into any one given category; most are some combination of two or three.

Steve Jackson's GURPS (Generic Universal Role Playing System) is extremely versatile, as you can play in any genre- from fantasy to futuristic and anything in between) using the same rules- requiring only 3 six-sided dice. You start off with a number of "points" to spend on attributes (Strength, Dexterity, IQ, and Health), pick character "advantages" and "disadvantages", spend points on skills- and you're away.
Years ago my friends and I easily recreated GI Joe-type scenarios and made our own characters. The GURPS Basic Set will have plenty of stuff that you need, and there are "World Books" to help you expand into whatever realm that you want. Best of luck to you, and have a blast! |

Yeah, there's a reason, I think it's one of the most unique systems out there. The original version that is, the d20 is just like all other d20 systems, you don't want that one. The original version boasts high roleplayability but also has a decent battle system and there's plenty of mischief to get into from all the source material. Also the different classes have their own unique flavor and are each vastly different from one another.

So, I think I might grab the WH40k Rogue Trader book, and I'm considering one of the Marvel games since the core books are about $10 shipped used.

Has anyone tried the Dragon Age pnp one?
I always wanted to get into it, but never knew anyone local that did it. I wonder if it's something that could be given an online element (not an MMORPG) but actually run a pnp campaign over the 'net the same as you would for real but with a computer interface....

Have the dice rolls and such be thru the computer, same with the character sheet.
Screen would be set up with a chat screen, which keeps records of moves, dice rolls, etc.. That's left. Right is character portrait and sheet, and place to input commands, etc.. Could actually be very cool... Could upload campaigns and download them for your group to play, could also do things outside your "group", so not always "stuck" with the same people, since all characters would be following the same rules. Could make it so all character sheets and campaigns follow the same rules, or allow it to be customized and lose the ability to play with all others and just be with your group.
