I'm sure most of us have collections we are proud of ,we display them in a way that respects and honors our collections ,and is in a space that is set aside that doesn't interfere with our day to day lives .But what happens when some of us have collections that are clearly out of control buying too much stuff ,using up precious closest and floor space storing toys and other "collectibles" ,with boxes pilled on top of boxes making our space feel more clausterphobic ,how is this "honoring a collection" it sounds more to me like hoarding ?
I saw a guy on youtube with a massive toy collection but he has all in storage (i heard he had three storage facilities storing all this stuff )and he kept buying more and more to add to his ever expanding collection ,...wow ...to me this is a waste ,how can you appreciate a collection that is in cardboard boxes in a dark storage room that doesn't see the light of day ,i'm sorry i don't "get it" ?And the monthly cost of paying for three storage units to stuff is probably eating up alot of his extra money he could use for other things ,and paying rent is wasteful because you have nothing to show for it in the end ,if i had that much stuff it would feel too overwhelming and stressful instead of enjoying it ? I keep all of my stuff in four glass display cabinets i bought from Ikea ,lined up against my wall ,i also bought extra shelves and risers to display my stuff in the cabinets ,but i'm conservative about it i don't keep figures in bad condition or missing pieces either they get tossed in the rubbish or i give them away . |

I have only 1/5 of my toys on display. I have a small room so sadly I have the Marvel Legends, and DCUC, and Comics stored away around the house. Of course it's not just my house. If it was my house I would be able to display them one day...yes one day. Hoarders just have a problem ever seen American Pickers they have a yard full of junk and don't want to sell any of it.

As far as I'm concerned, hoarding is collecting. Some people just collect more aggressively/compulsively than others.
Who's to say it's ok for me to have a giant room full of my huge collection of toys, as long as they're displayed, or that it's wrong for Joe down the street to keep most of his collection in a storage closet, even though it's smaller than mine, just because he doesn't have space to display it all? Frakk, I'm like you - I don't have a ginormous collection, and what I have is almost all displayed. I personally wouldn't enjoy a collection that's boxed up and sitting in storage somewhere. But to each his own, ya know? Some people like to collect simply for the sake of owning something. It's not about seeing it for them, it's about having it. Me personally, I'd enjoy my collection as much if it were owned by someone else, and just on permanent loan to my display cabinet. I like to see them. I think there a lot of collectors who collect with a vague notion that someday they'll have a place to display it all. They daydream about what their future-Joe room will look like, how they'll display stuff, etc. I know this, cause I've done it. I'm just fortunate to now have enough room to take a small corner for displaying my collection!

While I recently packed up a lot of my Star Wars and some Lord of the Rings stuff to save space and make my apartment more liveable, I prefer to display everything I have. This is why my residence looks like the set from The Forty Year-Old Virgin. Sigh.
