I was intrigued by the famous "What song are you listneing too" thread. I think the music you listen to says a lot about you. Of course. But with the advent of programs like ITunes where you can program set lists full of favorite artists/songs it opens up the file so much wider into a person's personality and demeanor.
Plus with something like this, it's nice to have a way to connect with people on more than a "plastic" level! We all have the Joe Love... But to connect even further... Here's the test... 5 Top bands, and why. And 5 other "honorable Mentions"!!!

I don't think music sells much about a person. I listen to everything and anything, as long as I like the sound. I don't go for genres or anything like that, think it's kind of silly.
Pearl Jam, Tom Petty, John Mellancamp, Linkin Park, Cowboy Mouth, Anthrax, Metallica, Live, Kiss, Tim McGraw, Garth Brooks, Social Distortion, Trans Siberian Orchestra, Flogging Molly, Springsteen Don't really have a Top 5 or honorable mentions.

(Easy way for a bump!)
1) VAST: Besides the fact that I've hung out with the band during the last 4 shows in Chicago. The music is just a range of everything I feel. From in your face, to sulk in a corner music. Thrown Away, Sunday I'll be Gone, Falling From the Sky, Last One Alive, Lost. It's not good tunes to listen to when your drunk (believe me, I know) cause it hits you hard. But out of 7 albums, over 130 songs, theres only 20 I don't like/can't feel. Again I might be biased, but I hear Vast, and I can FEEL the song, cause I've lived what they sing or play. Not literally, of course. I've never been to L.A., and I've never spent a Tuesday Night in Austin. But I've felt like a flag ontop the moon. Alone. And all I know is that I'm here. Drifting. 2) Evanescence: Again, lyrics that just hit hard down into the heart, plus Amy Lee's voice is just phenominal, You hear certain songs, and it just ends up tugging at you. I'll honestly say, that the first time I head their "first" album, Fallen, I was at work, and I was crying by the end of it. Seen them twice, and it's awsome 3) Depeche Mode: A band I've been behind since high school. They just put out Violator, and me and my friends would cruise along the strip near Milwaukee to DM tunes. Old school Star Wars hunts. Racing other cars. Good memories, good tunes. The first good times I can remember, so therefore, sticking with them. 4) Tool. Just amazing music. Hard, deep, and struggling. While I like Maynards vocals in APC better, nothing beats Tool's music. "You Lied" off of Salival, is what got me into actually playing music and singing (Have given up both long since :( ) But there's nothing better than to play Tool as your sitting with a beer on the couch and just listen. it makes you feel. 5) Tori Amos: One of the most under rated artists ever. Granted the past few albums have lost me, but her old stuff, and seeing her live with my ex fiance. The lyrics are so hard, and harsh, but have a subtle, gentle caress to them. and then theres her piano. Precious Things always stops me in my tracks. And her duets with the famous. Mohhamad My Friend with Maynard Keenan, Past the Mission with Trent Reznor. And her covers of Smells Like Teen Spirit, Enjoy The Silence, Paint It Black and Wild Horses... Just WOW Honorables: The Cure, NiN, Staind, 30 Seconds to Mars, Mazzy Starr

I'm afraid I'm like Troynos in this regard... I listen to way too much music to be able to limit my favourites to a list of five or ten acts.
I listen to just about everything, from Django Reinhardt's pre-war jazz to Shonen Knife's absurdist j-punk to the hip-hop stylings of the Wu-Tang Clan. I suspect I started out listening to the same music a lot of the people here grew up listening to, though. Classic rock like the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, and Black Sabbath; contemporary metal like Megadeth and Pantera, that sort of thing. I've long since outgrown the whole "I only listen to genre x" thing, though. |

I don't think I can sum it up with 5 bands, and I think I'd be editing this post for at least to get to my satisfaction. I'll just keep thinking of stuff I think is cool, because there really is ALOT of cool stuff out there! I know! I was there!

I know there is that way of thinking...But for me. I've played bass and keyboards. I've even done some singing, so music is very influential in my life. Hell, after everything I've written, I got Ice T's New Jack Hustler playing right now LOL. There is that varied aspect, and personally I think that makes for a much more well rounded person. I don't believe in genres or stereotypes, or what not. I've been "goth" most of my adult life, I've also been metal and what not...but now the whole dressing the part is done, I'm just me. And I like a lot of music... and Maybe this whole thing is too vague. Maybe I should have done SONGS...but that can be a very personal thing (As Coldplay's Clocks comes on lmao) It's just a thing

But again...At least for me, there's certain music that hits, and touches, maybe even influences how a person is
So yeah, maybe this is a bad post. To lay a part of a person's real personality bare. Or maybe it's just the former muscian in me, in hopes to find other people with the same in depth feelings... yes, the feeling may be there, just hit differently through different music. But to have a MORE connection...the way we all have through the "plastic crack"...

thin lizzy- the greatest rock band ever, terribly underrated. nine awesome, near perfect albums in a row. nine. i can't think of another band that comes close.
kool keith- the greatest rapper of all time, terribly underrated. he's put out tons of stuff since leaving the ultramagnetic mcs in the early 90's, and most of it is brilliant. in cahoots with producer and beat maker kut masta kurt he has completely obliterated the competition for years. cannibal corpse- just keep getting better. having successfully survived a lead singer change (no small feat), they continue to be the hardest rocking band in metal. steely dan- seven albums in a row of engaging, thoughtful, beautiful music. i had high hopes for their later albums, thinking if anyone could pull off a twenty year come back, they could. they didn't. but the old stuff stands up. harvey milk- relatively unknown band from athens, ga. won't bother trying to describe their sound, it's out there but worth the trip. and they're really, really good live. honorable mentions- zz top (first six records especially), devo, t.rex, high on fire (first two records only), abba. |
