A few of you know how I've been trying to work with a group of guys who make films...
Well, mainly the film parodies/fan films they've been doing (Yeah, I don't know why Alice is played by a guy...) The problem is, the guy who heads it up is reluctant to take up new people...until he got to Columbia College. I'm ticked off at this because I have been letting him know how much I've wanted to work with him BEFORE he started there. And I get the same reply... Thankfully, this hasn't severed things between us, but it got me to wondering...is this wasted effort, or is he just being stubborn? I brought the subject of cronyism vs. growing as a director by taking risks to another film student friend of mine who's behind me on this...well, he hasn't replied yet to me. But I'm starting to think it's the latter. Hell, I have no idea how many times I can let him know. It also hasn't stopped me from making videos, although you can see from these two that I'm really angling to be in their "Batman" fan films... (I had to put the videos on Facebook, as people on YouTube" were being jerks.) Though more of my efforts are going to be less "Batman" centered... Anyway, what should I do? Should I convince him that if he wants to be a director he needs to grow and take risks? BTW, I'm passionate about this because I'm a fan of theirs. If I wasn't, I wouldn't be this persistent. Also, I'm making the videos initially as I love acting, and while I have too much downtime with theater projects and getting my actual career going, I have to do something.

No offense, but maybe you should back off a bit?
This post comes across as almost stalker-fanish. That and maybe he just isn't that into your work? Maybe it's not the style he's looking for? Here you are, trying to work with him, and accusing him of not taking risks and not being able to grow as a director because he won't take a risk on you? My advice would be to just back off and find other avenues to get your work out there. Everyone wants to work with people they are fans of, but sometimes it doesn't happen.

I agree. If he wants to work with you he will contact you at this point. You pushing farther is going to result in a restraining order and there goes your career.

I've been trying to let him know, but I haven't been doing it THAT much. If I WAS being a stalker, I'd be letting him know every damn day. Right now, I'm just too afraid to read his reply. I was accused of harassing him, but I hardly say anything. I really don't want to make him uncomfortable.
I do have a lot of people behind me, and it's not just with this. However, I don't believe in just sitting around and waiting. If I was stalking him, I'd be trying to go down where he is and demanding, but that's not my style.

Something you have to remember is that you're one of a dozen (if not more) people doing the same thing probably.
You don't have to sit around and wait, but there are other ways to go about it. Creators are bombarded with fans all the time saying "you need to work with me" and "you'll be so much better if you listen to my advice" and "I'm the most talented, you need me" (not saying you fall in to that group). It gets so bad that they just start turning if all off. There's a reason that Marvel Comics and other publishers no longer accept unsolicitated material. Those types above, make it almost impossible for people with legitimate ideas and talent to get thru. So then you have to work thru other channels. You talk with the guy. So instead of talking as a fan, talk as a friend. Don't comment on his abilities, that's the surest way to get labeled "stalker fan". Constructive criticism is okay, but make sure it is constructive and there's reason for why saying it beyond "If it was me I would have done it this way", make it technical. Speak the language. So him that you really do know what you are doing, but not in a "in your face way". Also, instead of posting stuff in the genre. Do something outside of the genre. So the complete range of your abilities. He probably watches a thousand fan made genre videos a day. Do something that makes you unique and stands out from the rest. Do something different. An example. Years back when the internet was new and the only forums were on AOL. I got to know quite a few people in the comic industry at that time. I was pretty good friends with an artist couple. I always wanted to work in comics, and they knew it, but I never once bombarded them with my stuff saying "hey, take a look at this" and they respected that. I didn't use our friendship to try and push my stuff. And they'd use me as a sounding board. I'd see artwork before anyone else and be able to give my thoughts on it. They knew I was a huge fan of their work. But I didn't treat them as if I was a fan. Does that make sense?

Well, I have completed something new...though I think that most of what I produce is for others to enjoy.
But I don't really sound like too much of a fan...I really don't like scaring anyone off. I tried too hard to get people to like me when I was younger, that I just decided that I'd not try too hard anymore. Although in some cases, I wonder if anyone's even paying attention. And it's really not just with talent, more like with my musings on everyday life.
