Jack Kirbys family deserve NO money from the "ownership" of Marvels characters. Jack Kirby should, but he is dead and buried. His "estate" didn't work on anything Marvel related, Jack did.
He signed his contracts, and I'm assuming he understood them. His work would be owned by Marvel. Case closed. I HATE these money grubbing claims by the "estates". It's nothing more than a money grubbing tactic by greedy people. Money for nothing.

This is just a sad and lame money grab by maggots trying to feed off of Kirby's corpse. It's pitiful really. I can understand Stan Lee fighting for years trying to get the credit and money for Spider-man because he created it. Spider-man is his. But this is just stupid. So Tod Mcfarlane drew and wrote a few issues is he gonna try and own it now too? Hold on scratch that I could so see Mcfarlane trying something like that.

Stan Lee would not have had half the success he did if Kirby and Ditko and others had not done the groundbreaking art that helped define the images. A few years back Stan Lee did all he could to prevent former writers and artists from getting royalties for the characters they helped create, then he turned around and sued Marvel himself to become a millionaire when the movie cash started rolling in. Kirby, Ditko and quite a few others are just as deserving as Stan the Hypocrit Lee. A lot of these older artists and writers created cul;tural icons that put hundreds of millions of dollars in some one else's pockets and died penniless. I hope the family gets enough cash to choke a horse. And I hope lots of other artists and writers get theirs too. |

Hey man love him or hate him it's still Stan's creation. Yes I also know about what Ditko has said on the subject and even Stan has publicly commented on it all the time. Like it or not he still came up with about half of the Marvel comics we read today and he wrote the first ones. That's part of why the courts ruled in his favor.
As for the folks that drew the comics well they drew them. Mignola drew Dr. Strange and Jim Lee did X-men but they still didn't create or own the tittles. Neil Gaiman wrote Sandman. Alan Moore wrote Swamp Thing and created John Constantine but neither one owns those tittles. DC owns them. I know the companies have screwed over the artists for years and the old contracts were so unfair. That's how things were and still are. That's why the good folks at Dark Horse comics and others have been fighting to change that. But that fact is Stan still legally created Spider-man. Like it or hate it until someone can legally prove that's not true that's just the way it is. |

I am not sure where I fall with all of this. All I can say is that there has to be a point where the families are cut loose. I know that Kurby created or at least help create these characters but is it right that the families can keep asking for more money? I am not a lawyer so I guess I can't say but it all sounds like money grubbing to me.

Meh, I don't think it's particularly wrong for them to get some "inheritance", considering the literally billions of dollars Marvel made off Kirby's (and others) work.
JohnJett makes a very good point - they're not likely to get anything from Spider-Man, it was probably a strategic move on the part of the lawyers. |
