so since october i've been trying to hash out a bunch of my ideas and form them into a cohesive storyline. i have started some of the actual writing. the main problem (after the limitied amount of time i have to devote to writing) i have is that with after all the research and new ideas i come up with, i end up doing more revising than writing. but i do enjoy it and would love it if one day i could ever do this for a living. i'm 33, and rudyard kipling was 35 when he started. and i know j.r.r. tolkien completely scrapped 'the lord of the rings' several times before he finally got through it.
the idea i have would be better suited to comics, especially now that comics have flooded over into the mainstream over the past decade (which is fortunate for us geeks). although in truth, i'd much rather work in a graphic novel-style of story telling. it starts in 1938 and i intend it to continue through to the present, and then carry off into a doomsday/armageddon scenario. pulp-ish fantasy, it's largely inspired by: h.p. lovecraft (great old gods and occult books) hellboy (mostly the b.p.r.d.) indiana jones wwII (and subsequent wars) special ops/paramilitary teams cryptonomicon by neal stephenson year zero by jeff long the society for paranormal research the x-files millenium demonology etc. as well as other actual paranormal research groups and studies, including: mk-ultra the nazi's ahnenerbe and amt rosenberg societies project riese die glocke neuschwabenland rosicrucianism the knights templar princeton engineering anomalies research lab montauk project stargate project etc. anyway, can anyone suggest ways to organize your thoughts and ideas? i know, for myself, i've learned that i pretty much need to have the whole story hashed out and outlined before i can start any real writing. i just feel like i'm spinning my wheels a lot. every now and then they grip and knock out a good chunk of the story, but then i get bogged down in the details again.

There are a number of ways and tools to help you flesh out your ideas but you are pretty much doing what all writers do.
Rare is the writer who can sit down and write from point A to Point Z without stopping or revising, in fact I'd say no one does this. There are some great software tools that can help you make notes and then work them into the story though. Depending on what kind of writing you are doing, there is a program called Final Draft which works great but its a little pricey. If you want a free program that still is very good you could try Ywriter 5 it has some great features for putting your story all together and keeping notes. I'll be 35 in 2010 and I'm also an aspiring writer. I have had a few bits published here and there, but nothing to write home about, LOL. Writing is like you said though it is not age, or gender specific anyone can become a successful writer at any time in their life it just depends on how well you write, how good a story you tell and how well your audience receives your writing. There are a TON of writers websites out there that can give you great pointers too, and if you have money to spend some great workshops given as well.

I have found that using a journal to flush out characters, backgrounds and plots, work very well.

I had a video-game review published in a popular game-mag...but I ghost-wrote it so I didn't get credit, just $25 bucks for it...it still counts as getting published! xD

I finished out my last two years of high school in vocational school taking commercial art. I did the cover art and lay out (back when everything was still cut and paste, with actual glue) on several little magazines for local events like Christmas walks and coupon books, etc. It was not a lot of writing, but they were mass produced and distributed.

um, sort of both i guess. the story comes first, and i'd like to work out some artwork for it, but it wouldn't be a traditional panel by panel comic. i do a lot of sketching to figure out a lot of things, and i keep cumulating all kinds of research; books, photos, timelines, biographies, etc. wikipedia is probably my most referred to tool, and while yeah, you have to do a lot of fact checking, i'm not all that concerned about a work of fantasy being historically accurate beyond a certain point.

I've found that writing an outline works best. If you have a definate ending, you definately need to get point A and point Z established so you know what the end goal is. You can make up the middle as you go along, just need to make sure it follows what you've already set up.
I've tried numerous times to do novels, but sticking to one main plot has always been my issue. I'm better suited to doing serials, like comic books, or shorter stories that all belong to one cohesive overall story. Check out the link in my sig to my J.O.E. verse to see what I mean. For the most part, this universe I have the basics of how I want it structured. I have outlines of how the various forces are set up, so I know what the guidelines I have to fit into are. Then I just let myself go wild.
