Either way the Green Lantern movie has epic fail written all over it. There is a lot of rich background characters and worlds attached to the GL and the chances of them pulling this off is going to be slim to none. What and how much are they going to sacrifice to show us that Ryan Reynolds can joke his way through another film... oh well. |

I loved the Godzilla remake and King Kong
I also love the Batman reboots Punisher Warzone , IMO, is an excellent reboot, but it's geared more to the diehard comic geeks (like me) |

Something that annoys me, take The Hulk (or The Punisher) for instance. The entire movie pretty much sets up the back story and gets everyone up to date, sets the franchise up for sequels, then it gets a reboot a couple years later with a different director. I feel like the first movie is then a waste of my time, and I still have to suffer through the "new" backstory when we could have a movie with nothing but complete action.
The director and actors I could care less about them changing. They could even leave the original out completely, but don't change the backstory when you make the reboot. Don't waste my time with that. Get to the action. |

They changed the backstory because the first two sucked and they wanted to wipe it clean.

I wasn't around when the first couple Dirty Harry movies came out. Infact, I never watched any of them until the mid 90's. With that said, any reboot or remake of Dirty Harry would suck balls. I don't know if Dirty Harry or Magnum Force are timeless, because they wreak of the 70's, but that's part of the charm. If the material belongs in the past, don't update it. Make the movie take place in the past. I honestly believe the GI Joe movie should have taken place in the 80's. That way the 80's cheese would be in context.

^ what he said, although I did like the first two, I like the reboots much better. BTW I forgot to add the Hulk to the list, now that was an awesome reboot!

Some movies are timeless, like The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, and the Wizard Of Oz, because they are set in a different time period and the action and storyline still holds up, years after it was made. And there have been lots of here-today-gone-tomorrow imitations of them. But this goes way back in time... centuries ago, people told each other stories and the same thing happened back then. There would be popular tales about, say, great heroes, and storytellers would make up new or rework the older stories to include the most popular heroes of that time. When writing and printing developed, the same thing happened... the storytellers took heroes and situations from their history or myths and turned them into popular stories. Even in this era it continues... before movies were invented, books were the entertainment, and for every popular book that was published ghostwriters cranked out countless horrible versions of them. The same goes for movies as well.. after Star Wars came out there were a lot of quickly forgotten Star Wars-like movies made and released, and all this will continue for as long as people have stories to tell.

Arthurdent: I think you hit the nail on the head. Studios want to ride the coat-tails of a successful film, by recreating their own version. Most of those "biters" go traight to home video though [thank god]. Think about all the slasher films of the late 70's and 80's. Now, ever since the success of the X-Men franchise and Spiderman, everyone's on the bandwagon.

Isn't that a little Mayan of you? I mean, you aren't against remakes and you haven't seen it yet. It might be really great.
Like any remake, one has to appreciate the original concept while understanding that any idea can be improved upon. That understanding has to be accompanied by an actual improvement, though. What confuses me is remakes of crap movies. Opinions are like assholes, you know. I'd have a knee-jerk reaction if Star Wars were to be remade, but I can't comprehend why in the hell any one would even consider starting over a franchise like Nightmare on Elm Street. So, maybe the base idea behind NoES can be improved upon by being remade. I hope so, because as far as I'm concerned, there's no where to go but up. Beyond that, I don't get the Ammityville Horror or Omen movies being remade, since they're practically the same with different, magazine-selling actors being the stars: beards and all. |

I thought we'd decided that since there were different characters in the new Karate Kid that it wasnt a remake but a sequal?
