A while ago someone posted an interesting question as to whether or not re-do the Star Wars Death Star playset. I don't know how many of you remember that playset, but I had one has a kid and it was AWESOME!!!!! Now, I wouldn't be opposed to the idea. But it would be cool if they did. Of course they would need to update it and make it more appealing. My suggestion would be to design the set in sections that could be sold seperately and sold as one complete set. The sets could be stackable, which could make the Death Star massive!!!! I don't know? That's my opion, what's yours?

There have been numerous discussions as why sectional/stackable playsets wouldn't work.
It's a good idea, just not feasible. You'd have some sections that are more desired get bought up and sold out faster (and scalped on EBay) and other sections that wouldn't get bought. More detailed/accessories, the higher the price for each section. So some people wouldn't want to end up getting all sections. And couldn't design it so that it would force people to, or you'd get something like what happened with Star Trek where they forced you to buy all the figures to get all the pieces of the playsets. How well did those sell?

Troynos, I totally get your point. However, I do think it is feasible. Scalpers and such are always going to be stealing our joy. You are right about Star Trek. If they designed the pieces to make each of them appealing, who know's. I don't know? I just always remain hopeful.

I loved the old Death Star Playset though I only owned one for about a week. I used it with my original Joe figures as an abandoned building half buried in snow that they had to search for bad guys. This was long before the cartoons so I had no idea about Cobra's plans for world domination.

I've been a proponent of the modular playsets for a long time. The trick would be to make each section interesting and playable enough to stand on its own if necessary. And, to make it so even if you were missing a couple sections, you'd still end up with a decent playset that didn't automatically look like it was incomplete.

Closeset thing I ever found to a new Deathstar was the Ultarama system. Comes in set's of 2 and either you can add your own backgrounds, Ultarama backgrounds, or print some from Rebelscum. I bought 2 set's to make a 4 level Deathstar along with their Deathstar backgrounds.

I would be surprised if there was anyone on this board who does not like the idea of modular playsets. But in addition to Troynos' comments, I think it is also difficult to design something that would actually be profitable, modular and of any significant size/detail.
