Hey gang, I just wanted to put this out there to see what y'all think about it:
I'm selling a guitar on ebay. This is a well-known name brand guitar that is not inexpensive and is made exclusively in the USA. The auction has a little more than a day left. The current high bidder has had the high bid for the past three days. I receive an e-mail today from the high bidder requesting the guitar's serial numbers so that he can verify authenticity. He also wants to know if the guitar is made in the USA or not. I think that it's a bit odd to ask for the serial number on something like this. I'm not sure whether I should give it to him or not and I'm not sure if ebay has a policy concerning this. Anyway, I just wanted to see what you guys think. |

why would it be odd to ask for the serial number.
full disclosure could get you more money if a person is checking to make sure it isnt a fake or stolen. its like buying a car and not checking its VIN |

Hey Joe, I'm a bassist and have dealt with buying and selling instruments on the 'bay, even vintage. I've seen people list the SN's like this, V001xxx (for a US Fender Vintage RI). This protects the seller from some stupid nonsense incase someone wanted to claim the item was stolen, but lets the bidder know the general age and origin of the instrument.
Hope that helps. -13 |

yupp.. also on Fender instruments, the first few (trooper13, keep me honest here as a fellow musician) indicate country of origin, in case someone is trying to pass of a Mexi strat for a US strat, and so forth. Also can be used to determine year, manufacturing plant, and all the original stock components that were available for that line, if someone is really looking to verify pickup type, electronics, neck wood, etc.
I bought a mexi strat for a lace sensor swap a few years back, dude had ground off the MADE IN lines but was very honest about it, and the serial served as a reinforcement. With all the watermark labels you can buy on ebay now, it's really a safe way for the seller to know what they have and for the buyer to check out the product and insure that they're getting what they are paying for.

Correct, for instance a MexiStrat from 99' would have this type of Serial.
MN902XXX Where as an American made would have a ... N902XXX Fender Japan uses a few odd different Serial Patterns, but it's asy enough to track down unless someone is really trying hard to get away with something. I don't think it's odd for the guy to ask, I think he's just trying to be safe. -13 |

Thanks for all the info guys! I've never had a request like this and I've sold a few guitars/amps/recording equipment before so it just struck me as strange.
But I looked on a few other message boards and this is a pretty common request. Also the serial number and country of origin was stamped on the back of the headstock, which I took a picture of and posted on the auction page, but I guess it was kinda hard to see. Also the guy only has a feedback score of 2 and hasn't had any transactions in the last year. His username also leads me to believe that he is a young guy and into metal, which gave me pause. (I'm not trying to play to stereotypes, I used to be a young metal dude myself so I know how it goes with them sometimes.) |

Since he is actually bidding I'd say go for it, but if someone's randomly asking I'd question it.

I sold a les paul studio with case and the shipping came to $48 at UPS. I insured it for $700(sale price) and required a signature. I sold an Ibanez 5-string with gig bag and it came to $40 at UPS. I insured it for $280(sale price) and I didn't require a signature. I went ahead and paid it because they really needed to go out, but I thought those prices were really high, is this the normal price to ship someting like this? |
