That's about right.. I once dished out an unexpected $200 to ship a Guild acoustic across the pond to London..
Guitars are pricey, depending on how you pack'em, they have to go in oversized boxes, already an upcharge. I made a foolish mistake of using Mail Boxes, etc , and got hit with some random upcharges for retail packaging I wasn't expecting.

I read on another message board somewhere that FedEx is cheaper to ship guitars. They said it's about half of what UPS charges.
I sold a BMX bike back in the summer and it only cost $43 to ship through FedEx and it was in a HUGE box and weighed around 35lbs or so. I mean the insurance amount wasn't as high so maybe that was the difference. Considering that it cost $43 to ship a bicycle I figured it would cost around $20 to ship a guitar. |

This doesn't sound like a bad request. It sounds like the bidder is just wanting to verify the product he wishes to buy. Go ahead and send him the number.

Not a bad idea, but can't be done for a Les Paul as the neck is glued in the body...I guess I could always saw it off and include a bottle of wood glue ;)
I've actually considered this for bolt-ons but if the hard shell case is included then that's kinda pointless...also whoever wins it would have to take it to a music store to have it put back together and re-strung and intonated which will at least cost $40 bucks. |

oh man.. that's a major deal-breaker if someone is saying they are pulling off the neck before shipping. too many variables.

I read somewhere that you need to de-tune the guitars to ship them because the tension that the strings put on the neck could cause it to snap if dropped or if the box gets hit too hard. But I've also heard that taking all of the tension off the neck causes it to need to be re-adjusted/set-up again. I've been playing guitar for along time and I know that at least once or twice a year a guitar will need to be intonated/set-up depending on how much you play. But i'm not sure how I feel about de-tuning it to ship. Does it really make that much difference? |

I've shipped basses within the ConUS for anywhere from $30-55 depending on if the person wants insurance, and how far. Basses are bigger, and usually heavier then guitars, so they tend to cost more. I've seen Strats and Teles ship for around 20, an LP might cost a bit more as they tend to be a bit heavier due to being mahogany.
Best bet is to take it to the post office or UPS drop off and have it packaged, and have them estimate shipping. Good Luck. -13 -13
