Hello all,
So I am writing a paper on consumerism as a collector, and I would like your thoughts about spending money on toys and why you feel you do it? Do you feel compelled to buy? Are you a completist? Does childhood nostalgia fuel your collection? Whatever the reason may be...? Anything you guys have to say on the subject-please do! AND, if I'm not being clear enough about what I'm asking, feel free to ask!

Toys are my entertainment. I play with them and I enjoy them. But I also see them as a business. A business which I use to generate income when needed.

Here are some reasons why I buy toys:
I enjoy them I think they look cool I can use them in a custom Childhood nostalgia helps with some toys, but not all. I don't exactly feel compelled to buy as I have picked up toys and set them back down before I get to the check out lane, but I have had days when I felt I owed it to myself to buy a toy (Thankfully that "urge" only rears it's head every once in a while) |

I've always collected for the art that goes into the toys. Toys have always influenced my drawing and stuff.
My current obsession with G.I.Joe is the perfect storm of 25th coming along as I lost interest in other lines and is honestly fueled, at least partially by childhood escapism at time when life has gotten stressful. Years ago, when life was difficult ina similar manner, Transformers started turning to cars again and had a similar effect. Finding this site has given a support system of information and similar individuals that wouldnt have been possible years ago. The internet has certainly affected our paricular type of consumerism i that way, as well as providing a visible interest to corporations who specialize in retro and obscure properties. Many of us might not set foot in a Walmart, or other particular store that may not be convenient without reading that an exclusive had just been found that week! |

I just love em. Collecting, displaying, and yes... playing!
I would say about 5% of my income goes to them. I have been buying steady since around 1995 (i am 35 now). I used to to the Ebay thing (buy big lots, keep what i want, sell the rest) but it was sucking the fun out of doing this. Now, i just buy whatever looks interesting. I have recently begun customizing, which adds a whole new level of entertainment! The biggest problem is space. I have a garage, an attic, and several rooms that are stuffed with toys. My wife gets annoyed sometimes, but the kids sure don't mind! Hope that helps! |

My vote for nostalgia.
The way I always looked at it...I grew up in the 80s-90s loving GIJoe. My folks would buy me a few here and there, I would trade comics and other toys with friends for more Joes, and then it all went to neon springloaded space Joes and I gave them up. Now Im an adult with some extra loot to spend, and though I dont want a COMPLETE collection I am collecting core characters and whoever I really liked as a kid. Though I may sell off the rest of my collectibles, the Joes are staying with me. Theyre going to my kids. I will teach them the importance of owning assets and maintenance. And who knows, maybe they'll be collecting the next generation of Joes. |
