So I have to go to Fairbanks, Alaska for 3 days next week on business and I hoping someone from the board here can help me out with the questions about preparation (I've never been there before). I grew up between Boston and Delaware. It gets cold but not like what I am about to walk into. So on that note I expect to go Airport to Hotel to Customer (indoors) to Hotel, preferably by car. My concern is freezing my @ss off starting with my fingers and toes. So...anyone here know just what I am in for in late November? I plan on dressing warmly but not to much for the excruciating plan ride from Newark, NJ to Seattle to Ancorage to Fairbanks which will literally take an entire day. Then I will bundle up I guess. I am thinking layering but honestly I don't know how much (I read it is sub-arctic temps). I don't own a big warm puffy coat but maybe I should buy one? Or can I get away with some extra layers?
Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks, BB |

I went to Soldotna, Alaska in summer probably 10 years ago or so. It was around 70 the whole time. As for November weather, I don't know. I'd bring gloves and thick jackets though, maybe a knit hat too

Don't forget the thermal underwear. It's funny I live in South Texas and we have 2 Burlington Coat Factories and they sell the thermal underwear cheap because no one here needs them.

Boom- Well considering it is currently 6 degrees here in Anchorage, I would strongly suggest getting a decent coat. But don't go overboard if you are working indoors. Fairbanks tends to be even colder than Anchorage. If you are out in the cold for work for any period of time, thermals would be a given. Pick up a couple of hand warmers too. Once again that's if you are working outside. I'd say a North Face jacket would suffice. Layer up, have a pull over sweater. Gloves and a touque(hat) are a must. Good luck

I used to work at a camping store, so...
Go to a real outdoors store like Adventure 16 or R.E.I, NOT Big 5 or Sports Chalet and crap. Ask them about Capilene base-layrers made by Patagonia. They're probably going to recommend Cap 3 or Cap 4 (Cap 4 is like for people who climb Everest). It's basically thermal under-garments, they make tops and bottoms). These keep you warm, and dry by getting rid of sweat faster, the Cap4 has a grid-pattern in it that keeps you even warmer by trapping warm air next to your skin (also called "loft"). Also ask about Merino Wool by Ice Breaker if you don't like the Capilene. These are just base-layers, you're going to need another layer on top of them, maybe a fleece sweater/jacket, and a down jacket on top (or whatever they recommend, they're usually friendly staff and have wild stories to tell, lol). And that's just for your core, then you need socks and maybe some insulated boots if you want. There are also insulated gloves available, also consider a beanie, but not a crappy thing you buy at the swap-meet, real beanies that keep you warm cost like $20 and up. Oh, and remember to ask if the jackets/coats they recommend have a wind-proof liner if you need it! Last edited by DrNightmare; 11-18-2009 at 06:00 AM.. |

Thanks guys, fortunately I will be indoors most of the time (most computers they keep out of the snow ;).
I'm already shivering. So how much sun do you get in Fairbanks this time of year? 4 hours? |

Boom..this time of year you will probably get a good 8 hours of daylight. The sunset for the other day was 4:20...lol. If you are working indoors...don't spend a lot of money on gear. Just have a good jacket. A good pair of shoes with grip, some gloves and a hat. It's not as bad as most people think. Just layer up if you go outside. I usually just wear a long sleeve shirt, a hoodie, and my columbia jacket and im good to go. It's only 3 days so you should be fine. If you have a rented car, start it 10 mins before you head out.
best of luck |

Boom I was born in Fairbanks and grew up in Anchorage. Listen to Riot and find a nice winter coat. Definetely buy some thick socks and maybe even some boots. Sneakers are not a great option even for small amounts of time outdoors. A far as what there is to do in Snowbanks, AK I hope your hotel has great cable. Being the second largest city in AK it still has only 20,000 people. It's going to be cold there no doubt but this will be an experience you won't soon forget. Enjoy.
