It sounds like you've got a "read-only" file. If you're using Windows XP, right click on the document's icon (in Explorer, of course, not within Word) and at the bottom of the context-menu, you should see an entry called "Properties." Click on that and select "Attributes." Uncheck the "read-only" option. The process should be similar in Windows Vista.

This is a good thread on the topic:
This modification is not allowed because the selection is .. Basically they boil it down to this: 1) You are using a trial, or unactivated version of Word - buy the product and activate it 2) Some portion of the document may be protected (access via Developer toolbar) go to the Review Tab of the Ribbon if the Restrict Editing & Formatting Task Pane isn't displayed. Then click the Protect Document icon (right end of the Ribbon) & choose Restrict Editing & Formatting. At the bottom of the pane click the Stop Protection button - if there is no password require you will be allowed to revise the document. If prompted for a password & you don't know what it is you can't make changes anywhere the Find Next Region... And Show All Regions... Buttons highlight for you. 3) [Office Button] -> Prepare menu has a "Mark as Final" option that makes a document Read Only. If this has been done, there is an icon in the Status Bar (to the right of the Word Count) that says "Marked as Final" when you hover over it. To undo, just go back to the Prepare menu as select the "Mark as Final" option again. |

BTW, if you're using a trial version of MS Office whose trial-period has expired, there are other free alternatives to it, premiere among them OpenOffice (available here). I've been using OpenOffice in some form or another for the past 8 years and I've never had reason to go back to MS Office. Its word processor has most of the features found in Word and some features that even Word doesn't (it can export directly to PDF, for one thing).
You can also try Googledocs (available here), a browser-based productivity suite. Have no experience with it myself, but I've heard mostly positive feedback about it. |
