I have been living with my cocker spaniel for 12 years. He is 15. I rescued him from the pound at age 3, where he was 1 day away from being killed.
now in his old age, my family is contemplating putting him to sleep. I dont want that to happen, because I dont think he's too bad yet. at the moment, he is deaf, and has some eye issues, but he's otherwise a happy dog, who does walk around a bit, and has a spring in his step. I dont want to lose him now, but time is not on our side. I want to know, from anybody who has any experiance with this tragic side to being a pet owner. When is it time for me to say goodbye? Personally, I'd prefer him to just go on his own. but life isnt fair

tough call no other medical issues though? besides the one you mentioned?
cause i am going to let my cat go on her own unless she gets terrible sick and looks like she is in pain then putting her down will be an option

When he's not comfortable, put him down. Until then, enjoy him as much as you can.

when he is sick and in pain, it is time to do the right thing and put him down. until then, a dog can be happy, deaf, dumb and blind.

My dad had to make this discision when i was about 16 with our family dog, who was gettin on in years, about 18 or 19 I think. The decider was the fact that the dog had so many issues he couldn't really be enjoying life anymore. It doesn't sound like your dog is there yet. I believe if the animal is reall suffering it is a kindness to let them go. A quick prick of the vet's needle and the pain is done. You will still have the fond memories.

Now THIS is a topic I know something about...
Hi, I own pet rats, currently 42 of them. Most of them are pedigree. My wife and I are a rat sanctuary. We had a rat named Nightwish. He was a sweet and loving boy and was approaching 2 years old which is OLD for a rat. Then he had a stroke, couldn't move, had to inject fluids into him to keep him alive, but still no recovery. This went on for days until we thought it would be best to end it and spare him the pain of a slow and agonizing passing...this was decided on the day before Thanksgiving that year. We thought about the following: 1. Freezing him while alive...too cruel by rat owner standards 2. snapping the neck...While that would have been quick, I would not have been able to live with myself. 3. Put him in a blanket and then in a ziploc bag, air runs out, no more pain. That was the decision. He was put up in the attic, sealed bag, we cried A LOT and said our good-bye's...Thanksgiving morning he was kicking and fight hard to get out of that bag! He had the will to live, which was not there for the longest time! He lasted with renewed vigor until after Christmas when he went quietly in his sleep. If you want to follow my family's rules, feel free...each baby goes on their own terms. We do what we can to keep them alive, but when the time comes, the time comes. You'll know when to mentally prepare yourself for the loss. We will NEVER intentionally try to end a baby's life again! |
