These zombies only want your brain as an after-dinner mint. No one is safe.

I would go to the nearest home depot, pick out a nail gun, make appropriate barricades (tons of lumber to use), set up a generator, If I'm in a group we'll send out scavenger parties to raid the local grocery stores, and then we'll just chill at our new home. If we need anything we'll send out a party. And we'll go Dawn of the Dead on any home depot trucks for a quick escape if need be.

I work at a community college, which would mean that we would be on lock down at the first signs of distress near the campus. I am a biologist, so we have blades, just not a whole lot with reach out an touch you capabilities. My main concern would be getting home (45 minutes away normal drive) and collecting my wife and small daughter, then getting to my son's school to get him. In my office and labs, I have duct tape, cardboard boxes, self-healing pads for dissection trays and some lab coats. I would fashion some type of armor out of a combination of these things to protect my chest and limbs. I also have safety goggles and a hard hat that I would strap on to ensure that my head was safe. There is a small trench shovel in the lab that I would use as a weapon. Taking these items, I would make my way to my car, in the hopes that I could at least get part of the way home. Most of the area that I live in is rural, so I could bypass a lot of the city centers and stick to back roads, which hopefully would minimize my exposure to the dead. If I can make it home and get my wife and kids, the next stop is my dad's. He has three handguns and ammo and a brand new shotgun with pistol grip. He also has my grandfathers shotgun and a long rifle. After collecting my parents, I would find a place for us to hole up with water, ammo, and food. My main concern would be my dad's diabetes at this point. We could probably avoid or fight off most of the zeds, but he has to have insulin or he is toast. So we might have to make a run to a pharmacy to liberate some insulin and other medical supplies. Sounds good on paper anyway.

well now your opening comments complicates my situation because I'm am after all a UPS driver and my route is over an hour from my house. where BTW i can fortify in just a few minutes and that's where my guns and gear is. so i guess I'm screwed. I hope my wife paid attention to the training i gave her but i think she was to busy rolling her eyes.

I work at a pizza place, which is where I'd likely be in the instance I would hear about an outbreak. I would shut down everything in the store and lock up the place as a possible safe house.
As I rush home (18 min drive on curvy paved mtn road), I'd call my friends (warning them) and family letting them know of the situation, telling them all to pack light and get the weapons. We have several rifles, pistols, and shotguns at our house. I also have several bladed weapons, daggers, and emergency gear stashed away cuz I'm kinda paranoid lol. Once I knew how many wanted to hole up with us, we'd rendezvous at either my house (back in a small rural area) or my Dad/stepmom's place (about 20 mins from us located on a major highway). We'd pick up my sisters, her husband, and two boys, and meet up. Once we had an idea of where the infestations are concentrated via radio/phone calls (if available), we'd head out in as few vehicles as possible. Likely my sister's Denali and my Jeep. Maybe my Dad's Silverado. We'd head for the nearest uninfested area or government shelter. If those aren't available, we could hole up at the pizza place for a spell. There's only two front doors and a bolt-secured back door (that you'd probably be hard pressed to get into EVER), 3 bathrooms, and several walls / counters that would impede lurking zombies' views of possible meals. The cooler could house us if necessary as a last-stand bunker. One entry, easy for bottle-necking. If possible I would try to fashion armor from our various pans and tools around the restaurant for some of us. My Dad has Army Ranger training, I've had some martial arts and weapons training, my brother-in-law is a carpenter, my Sister an X-ray tech and nurse, and my Mother a teacher/horse person (in case we needed alternate transport). If we needed hospital supplies, my Sis has access. Building supplies for barricades: my Brother-in-law. My best friend would likely be with us since we hang out all the time, and he has access to our local Walmart (is knows where the gun cabinet keys are), as well as martial arts training. From there we'd plan our next move.

I would grab every knife I have (I work at a Chinese restaurant) and Ginsu chop some f@%#in' zombies! I would have enough food to last me a long time- though I might get sick of Chinese food after a while.
I always thought Wal-Mart would be a good place to hole up in a zombie outbreak. Guns, food, toys, except if there were any regular Wal-Mart shoppers in there, I'd rather take my chances outside with the zombies.
