So, I'm honestly a bit excited about the Marauder Task Force RPG, if for nothing more than the skirmish rules. The RPG sounds like a lot of fun, as I've spent a significant portion of my life playing tabletop RPG's.
So, while we're waiting- I figured I could offer up some RPG alternatives to the Marauder Task Force RPG. D20 Modern: Essentially D&D 3rd edition rules with a modern twist for firearms and vehicles. Mechanically speaking, it functions pretty well as a game and has a LOT of options. With add-ons like D20 Past and D20 Weapons Locker, you can add more variety to your arsenal. If you want to take this a step into the weird- you can add D20 Future (Science Fiction rules with alien races, mechs, and the like), D20 Apocalypse (Post-Apocalyptic stuff of every variety), D20 Future Tech (Science Fiction equipment) D20 Cyberscape (Cybernetics and Cyberspace), D20 Urban Arcana (Magic and such), Dark * Matter (Basically Conspiracy stuff like X-Files), and others you can create a truly unique military-themed RPG campaign. Blood And Guts will actually help you create Navy SEAL, Army Green Beret, and Marine Force Recon characters. And yes, it's perfectly normal if you end up using a Magical Holy M60 to mow down a mob of demons and zombies, while one of your friends tries to figure out how to use an alien blaster cannon that's mounted on the top of your HMMWV. Dogs of W*A*R is a simple, cheap RPG that plays on the theme of 1980's and even 1970's military action flicks. It's over the top, a lot of fun, and a good 'weekend RPG' that you can use to get a breath of fresh air- alternatively, you could dedicate as much time as you want to this one. It's pretty smooth to play, and has a lot of room for just plain balls-out 'dumb fun action'. Behind Enemy Lines, Recon, and Twilight 2000 are three games from the same company. Behind Enemy Lines focuses on Commandos in World War 2, Recon is focused on the Vietnam War, and Twilight 2000 is post-WW3 and focused on surviving military units in the immediate aftermath. All of these games are pretty decent, and you can usually find scanned PDF's of them for free on the internet. Delta Green is basically 'Black Ops meets Call of Cthulu'. It is not a simple, 'run and gun' action game. It's a covert operations game where you're stopping extradimensional horrors older than mankind from trashing our world and wiping us out (at best) or completely erasing what we know as reality (most likely). This gets more spooky- you can probably get into a gunfight with the Esoteric Order of Dagon or call in an artillery strike on a Shoggoth- but you're also going to run afoul of several OTHER paramilitary/alphabet soup organizations like Majestic 12 and the like. Oh, and you'll die easy against the actual horrors and you'll probably go insane. But hey, that's the game. And you can carry an M60 at least. |
