When I moved to Houston from NYC just over 3 years ago,I mailed 3 huge boxes on my personal belongings ahead to Houston. Each box weighed about 20 something pounds,I believe the heaviest one was 29 pounds. I clearly remember paying only $77 for all 3 boxes and I believe the heaviest 1 was only 30 something dollars.
Recently I went to mail a joe item that only weighed 2 pounds and a couple of ounces and and elected to send it the cheapest way(non priority) and to my surprise it costed me 7 dollars and change to ship, not including the tracking I paid for. I dont understand how I can mail something 29 pounds a much futher distance for only 30 something bucks and mail something roughly 2 pounds for damn near 8 bucks. My questions are,did USPS raise their rates or is it a local issue,If they did raise their rate, what would justify such a dramatic increase? Did they go bankrupt or something? Also, are there any cheaper alternatives for mailing stuff? |

They raised their rates a while ago. UPS is cheaper on heavier packages but not if it is certain dimensions. They charge more for larger packages though, even if it weighs so much.

Yeah, postal rates go up all the time. They're in such a crunch, they're actually talking about stopping mail delivery on Saturdays.

USPS is part of the federal government. All of their changes are nationwide and could never be just local. And yes, they have increased their rates over the last 3 years to offset increases in fuel prices / supplies and decreases in usage (online bill pay, email instead of letters, etc.).

Yeah,I remember hearing something about that no mail on saturdays thing. I didnt know they was suffering from the current state of the economy, I wouldve thought that the usps was making plenty of money. Every time I go to the post office, its a line out the door.

My Aunt works at the Post Office as a supervisor and she makes 35 an hour. The normal workers make 15-25 an hour and etc. All of that money has to come from somewhere. Plus, they are union.

I tried to send a package recently and if its measurements don't fall within a certain limit they charge a ridiculous amount to ship it, regardless of how much it weighs.
The box in question had a Target Exclusive Endor Battle Pack in it (the one with the AT-ST and the logs) and they wanted to charge me $30 or so to ship it. I took it (and the rest of my packages to UPS) and it cost I think $12 to ship it there. To be fair, the lady at the post office was apologetic, and explained the situation to me. She also said she thought it was stupid to charge that much for it, but she said the measurements of the box dictate the shipping cost. |

I know a person who last I knew doesn't even have a GED who works fulltime at the USPS, makes about $15 an hour, and has benefits. They started under a year ago. Most jobs don't give that. |
