I'm from the Bay Area in California, about as far away socially and geographically as you can get from NY, PA, and D.C.
I remember walking outside on 9/12 and seeing the American flag on nearly every car in my neighborhood and hanging from every house and most windows. It was humbling and awe-inspiring. People made eye contact with each other and nodded, but most of us walked with our heads down. I lived about a minute from SJ Intl airport and it was eerie not seeing or hearing any planes overhead for what felt like weeks. One day I was downtown and the first flight to take off from the airport since the attacks flew overhead and people came out of stores and buildings to watch it and cheered and clapped. I felt incredible pride in my country and a fellowship with everyone around me. The moment was bittersweet, but the pride was overwhelming. Everyone walked with their heads up. Those are the things I like to think of on the anniversary. Never Forget. |

Friend at work sent this around. I never knew this monument existed. It was donated to the US by the Russians (yes, the Russians).
To the Struggle Against World Terrorism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I'm surprised this didn't get major media attention. No politics here, just letting people know about a monument they might never have seen before. It's a really nice one too.

That was a terrible day, i remember hearing about it on the radio while at work, me and all my workmates were in shock. My thoughts go to all the families who lost loved ones. God bless them all.

I usually can't remember what I was doing last week, but I still remember exactly what I was doing when that happened. I was listening to Howard Stern talk about how Pam Anderson was flirting with him, and all of a sudden they break in with how one of the towers is on fire. I turn on the TV and sure enough they are showing everything, and everyone was wondering how such a tragedy could have happened, and then the second plane hit, and the whole tone changed. His coverage was actually pretty good, and when one of the interns asked about Pam Anderson he was justifiebly shouted down. The next day he openely wondered what he was doing on the radio, but everyone called in and told him how important it was that people have a voice they're familier with to help them through this time. Crazy.
Man, how many people in this country don't even know The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France, or how they helped us against the English in the War of Independance? Last edited by Zefram; 09-11-2009 at 05:59 PM.. |
