I've been at my job now for just over a year, and while it pays decent money, my girlfriend and I can barely keep our heads above water. There's very little that could be cut out of our budgets, and most of our necessities (after all our take home cash is spent on bills) are stacked up on credit. I have child support and we both have student loan payments, but we own our cars, we rent a cheap apartment, we live as meagerly as possible, but we both still manage to come out a little further behind each month.
So, to get to the point, I'm looking at going back overseas for a year as a civilian military mechanic in the Middle East, because that would eradicate our debt and then some. I'm just starting to look at jobs. I did this once before, after serving 6 years in the Army as a heavy wheel diesel mechanic, and made decent money (83K for one year, tax-free), but now I know how this works a little better, so I know there are other jobs that pay into the 6-figure mark. My question is; has anybody else done this or does this? If so, could you tell me who you work(ed) for and where and what it was like? I was in Tikrit, Iraq, and while things occasionally flew in and blew up, it was pretty quiet. The first time I went, I really didn't think twice about it. But now I've got some doubt, and I'm not sure if it's about my safety or if it's about not finding work or if it's having to suffer that godawful heat again. I am looking for work outside of that part of the world as well, but that's where I could make the most in a short amount of time.

Dude, you have to consider what is best for you and your family. Is your family going with you? If not, put a value on the time that you will be missing with them. Is it a short or long term solution? As far as I know debts will always be there. As soon as you pay one off, you'll be borrowing again soon.
Right now the economy is in the toilet (I am currently unemployed right now) but just hang on. Things will get better soon and who knows what's around the corner in the next couple of months. Whatever you decide, good luck to you and may God be with you.

Man, and here I thought this was going to be about teaching in Korea or something...
I say go for it. Think long-term, and how this will benefit you and your family. It'll be tough, no doubt, but it might be what you need.

I say just do it if it's for a few months. How much are you and the GF into each other? Don't go work overseas and then come back to pay her debts too only to have her tell you she's moved-on afterwards.
