Great thread, good stories.
I witnessed many, many memorable incidents during the four years I worked at two different Wal-Marts, but I guess the three biggest, which all happened circa 1997, are: Guy unloaded his pistol into the snack bar in the middle of the day, then sat at a table and calmly drank coffee while waiting for the cops to come get him. Turns out he was trying to get a crazy check. No idea if it worked. Guy who once thought he was Jesus (he used to dress in white robes and carry a huge wooden cross up and down the highway) went crazy over Star Wars figures. He tried to get a search warrant to search our stockroom for 'em, and threatened to drive a truck full of explosives into the local K*B Toys if they didn't get the figures he wanted. He was eventually banned from both stores. I've encountered him a few times since then, when I worked at the local comic shop. He's not much better nowadays. And my personal favorite, the guy who got away with stealing bras for several weeks by taking them into a fitting room and putting them on under his shirt. When he finally got busted, he had like 300something bras in his car. He'd either raided every Wal-Mart within fifty miles that day or didn't feel safe keeping his bras at home, I never did find out which one. ;b |

Haaaa. These are sad.
Was a DM... Fired a kid once, a part time employee that had worked for 3 shifts over a 3 week period.. Got a call from corporate about these CRAZY long distance phone charges from the store.. Traced back the schedule, went to talk to this kid, he fessed right up and said he'd been on the phone with his girlfriend in colorado, racked up around $200 in LD charges, out of the 9 total hours he had worked. We don't have long distance plans. We were retail, had to fire this kid and tell him he had to pay for the calls. He responded, "it's cool man.. was gonna quit next week anyway. can you take it out of my severance plan?" Was totally taken aback... Laughed. First time I ever laughed at someone, to their face. Severance. Didn't laugh that hard during Chappelle season 1.

A few quick hits from my time working in the meat room at a supermarket.
1) Around the holidays I had a woman ask for hams. I showed her the hams. She said couldn't have that because it was pork, she was allergic to pork, and could only have ham. I tried, unsuccessfully, to tell her that ham is smoked pork. I even got the dept. manager and she didn't believe him. she ended up buying no hams. The pork/ham story is pretty hilarious in full, but I just wanted to give the gist of it.

Oh, God. Thanks, I had done my best to forget about July Fourth for the better part of two years :P~ The burly 01s I worked with all had off for their favorite holiday, so it was just me and an assistant manager, who must have been at the very least a healthy 500 years old. Store closed early, but with enough time for an 8-hour shift. Me and the d*mn mummy spent the whole time loading discount lawn ornaments and furniture into hatchbacks too, too small. Customers apparently don't like when they buy furniture that can't fit into their cars, so we had to pull some friggin' MC Escher mathematics to load people's kitschy crap. Quite literally, I still have scars from that. Martha Stewart's line of Lawn Nightmares split my shoulder open when it didn't want to get into a f*ck*ng car. You think a K-Mart is willing to give its first aid supplies to employees, let alone 01s? HA. I am a living testament to K-Mart's sins.

When I worked at target many years ago,one day I went home after my shift but I forgot to punch out,the next day I explain to the HR that I forgot to punch out,she had me filled out a punch correction sheet,a few days later I was pulled into to office and accused of stealing time then I was fired. Though I didnt do anything wrong I didnt bother to fight it because I knew the store manager didnt like me for whatever reasons and she's has been fishing for bs reasons to fire me for the longest,I honestly didnt feel comfortable working for her because if she was capable of accusing me of stealing time and demanding I be terminated even when thr H.R. try to defend me,she was capable of accusing me of much worst. the HR knew she had it out for me and was very sympathetic but she had to do what she had to do,which I understood. The store manager even went as far as having the night crew manager, who just happen to be one of her closest friends, lie in the paper work claiming she witnessed me hanging out in the breakroom hours after my shift ended which would make me seem like I stole time.

I worked customer service at a Circuit City about 6 years ago. One day a woman comes in wanting to return her VCR. She said it didn't work. I asked her if she had the power chord plugged in properly. She angrily answered that of course she did, she's not stupid! I then asked her what kind of cables she used to hook it up to a TV. She looked at me with a blank look. "TV? Nobody told me I had to hook this thing up to a TV!"
Actually happened. |
