Not sure how you do it in the US, but in the UK the point is that there are far more SCOs in a store than there would have been manned checkouts. So generally fewer queues and quicker experience.
I get the concerns about jobs, but equally it creates another unseen centralised industry to support the technology. Not sure if you have scan & go style technology in any stores over there. You scan your goods as you shop and then pay at the checkout at the end. I used to work for a UK company that was a subsidiary of Walmart and it was interesting to see the differences in approach and what customers expected as a service on different sides of the Atlantic, from businesses that seemed very similar. |

Some of the Targets re-opened Self Checkouts.
No cash. Debit or credit only, 10 items or less. Still no sign of Walmart re-opening Self Checkouts here yet. Quote:

Our Self Checkouts are basically massive lines where you wait your turn to fiddle with a machine that immediately locks you out if you changed your mind so it then calls an employee and wastes even more time. This in a society where everyone has cars and has to driver anyways so there is no practical limit to the amount of groceries per trip you can carry so it's common to see people buying [A MONTH's WORTH OF GROCERIES] And this happens all the time. In fact the Cashier in the only staffed lane is probably scanning an Old Lady's MONTH worth of Grocery while a bearded man behind her has another cart of a Month's grocery staring at a Beef Jerky Snack and then there's Bob standing there trying to buy a Banana because he's lazy.

As a matter of principle, I'm against any measure that is nothing but a cost savings measure for a company that's paraded as a customer service/convenience, even if the result is ultimately incidental.
I don't fall into the "it takes people jobs" camp, but if it's taking their jobs, I want to see the savings in my pocket, not in the company's bottom line. It's essentially getting free labor out of me because your too inept or too cheap to staff your store with efficient people. I guess I just long for a time where commercial industry occasionally ate a cost for the benefit of their customer. Now, every fucking dime passes to us.

Lol, I see a lot of that down here in Florida.
For years, my trick at Target is to use the lone self checkout between pizza hut and Starbucks. People avoid it, I think, because they think it's just for food purchases. But it's not, you can scan all your stuff there. The amount of times, especially in December, there's been 10 people in line for the self checkouts, and I just roll up to that lone register and boom! I'm gone on a flash. It's been frickin sweet.

Maybe it's because I'm in Florida and we tend to get new stuff faster here than other states, but overall, in the Walmarts I've been to, they have upwards of like 20-40 self checkouts. So there isn't much of a line, and they are, in fact, getting you out the door much faster. They even have differing sections of self checkouts, some with the belt, geared towards large purchases, some without the belt, geared towards faster purchases.

Any of you guys a member of SAM's Club? Every single checkout is self with the only staff being those there to answer any questions. Not sure if costco is like that but Wait till every place is like that.

Almost everyone goes to the Employee manned Checkouts. There are so many you rarely need to wait long for them to scan fast and you go. The Self Checkouts function just like Express lanes mostly. Honestly don't know if I'm getting my money's worth on Costco membership but the Gas perk and those Giant toilet paper sets are nice.

So based on what you and I are saying here, from a customer standpoint, the problem isn't so much the self checkouts, but the fact that maybe small town Walmarts never installed an adequate amount of self checkout registers? Because I've been to more than one Walmart location down here, where the large # of self checkouts make the whole 'going into Walmart' thing much less of a hassle.
Just recently, a Walmart Supercenter near me had all SCOs closed and a few traditional checklanes open...it was like stepping back in time. As I stood there getting coughed on by patient zero in the queue with my vinegar, olive oil, loaf of bread, lunch meat and oranges (it was supposed to be a quick stop on the way home from work), I was fully expecting some old lady with a cartload in front of me to pull out a fuckin checkbook.
