What is your best find at a goodwill store? Honestly for me nothing. I did find a barbie airplane that I got for my daughter once and the other day found a Jurassic World vehicle. That isn't really a big thing though. Most the time I find crap.

The advent of eBay and smartphones kinda killed most of my luck at thrift stores. Anymore, you'll always either see flippers whipping the phone out to appraise everything in the store, or even worse, the store itself searches the item before it even goes out and prices the item accordingly (this was my job a few years back, actually- I felt bad about it after awhile). I rarely even bother to check them or yard sales these days, unless I specifically need something best found second hand, like a bookshelf or whatever.
Back in the day though, I used to find all kinds of great stuff. A crate full of boxed NES games with the console for $25, the entire first wave of TMNT figures, complete for $5, loads of loose N64 and SNES carts. Shitloads of clothes, too. I also passively collect Stephen King hardcovers (as well as a few others), so books are always a go-to section.

The last Goodwill I went to was infested with fleas.

I haven't gotten any good toy finds at a thrift store since the mid 2000s. My last great finds were all on one day a G1 Megatron (gun only), G1 Autobot Blaster, 3 G1 insecticons, G1 Ratchet, a bag of tranformers weapons, and a Rolling Thunder missile. Toy finds dropped sharply after 2010 and I haven't seen any GI Joe since the Rolling Thunder part.
I keep hoping to find custom fodder or vehicles I can turn into Joe vehicles but sadly never see anything. Video games, besides sports games and shovel-ware are pretty much nonexistent at thrift stores since the auction houses and speculators wrecked the retro video game market. Last video game related product I got from a Goodwill was 2 Wii nunchuks a few years back, now the local ones want $10 for controllers with broken analogs sticks and any game with a recognizable name is sold on the goodwill auctions at an insane price. The best finds for me from Goodwills are mostly music, movies, and books but those have started drying up too or being priced ridiculously. From 2012 -2020 while everyone was downsizing to Iphone and streaming music I was able to piece together a very nice component HI-FI system and a massive collection of physical media. I have something like 500 thrifted cds of every band in every genre I've ever wanted I never paid more than a buck for. My reasoning was if its a dollar a song to own a digital copy why not buy the full album for that price and rip a higher quality copy to my hardrive and never have to worry about a music service being canceled. Sadly I've noticed Goodwill has started taking the rarer stuff to their online store so I rarely pick up cds from them anymore but other thrift stores in the area are still good for finds. I used to buy a lot of vinyl too but the hipster and vinyl resurgence ruined the days of cheap $0.50 - $1.00 classic rock records, Goodwill wants $3.99 and up for scratched and warped ancient religious records now that will never sell. I still occasionally find good DvDs and Blueray but Goodwill has started pricing those weird now too. I used to get tons of great books from Goodwill but like with everything else they've started taking the good stuff off the floor and selling it online instead. My last great find was a 5e D&D dungeon masters guide for $0.25 years ago. Last edited by sisco; 06-06-2023 at 07:08 AM.. |

I've only ever found a few vehicle shells that were barely worth the couple of bucks being asked. I rarely check anymore.
