I've often heard OCD can be a byproduct of anxiety, at least the kind with our little rituals and lock checking (done that one before too). I suppose that makes sense when it presents as a need for order as well.
I notice it most among collectors with the completest mentally. I had a talk with myself years ago about why I was buying figures I didn't really care for and the only answer was because they were part of the line. Stopping that behavior was the best collecting choice I ever made. Toy companies know this as well. That is the exact reason classified has numbers on the sides of the boxes. A large number of collectors may hate figure 19 (just randomly using a number) but damned if it doesn't drive them nuts to have 18 next to 20 on their shelf. Then we get exclusives, variants, etc.

"Collect 'em all!" They literally indoctrinated us early with that noise, and they've only refined it since with build-a-figure and all the insidious association-building. I still feel that last one when trying to decide what stuff I don't need to part with. I'll look at something and feel it's a no-brainer to ax, but then I start thinking about how it has a connection to something else in some way, and that connects to something else, and that connects to...etc. Before I know it, I ain't getting rid of shit.

Yeah, that helps the whole weird-ass "That shitty choice is taking "the spot" of something better they could be making!" thing make more sense.

When I got home yesterday, my wife told me my new Levis arrived and were on the bed waiting for me to do my "ritual." I asked her wtf she meant, and she said, "You know, that thing you do where you inspect each pair for damage/defects, try them on, then if all goes well, carefully remove all the tags and keep them on the dresser for the next week or so." I was like, "ritual" implies I do something out of the ordinary...is what I do weird?
Anyway, it's something I hadn't even really realized I did, let alone that someone else had noticed it. Anyone else have something similar?

So it is sorta weird behavior that tells a story if you think about it. I'm pretty sure there are behaviors like that all the time, but we just don't think about it. It's like how you can tell a flinching dog was likely repeatedly beaten, only more subtle and complex.

I carefully remove and keep the tags on the dresser for a little while instead of just ripping 'em off and throwing them away. You know, in case the jeans fall apart and I have to return them. lol It's something that made a lot of sense when I was poor, and now I just keep doing it almost unconsciously even though it's really not necessary.

I’m not doing it to smell pleasant to others. It?s a mental thing. I can?t be dirty and work out. I realize it makes no sense but I need a clean slate mentally to begin a workout.

This exactly! I see it happen all the time, not just for Hasbro figures but also in LEGO too. The fans constantly hate on the company and complain about them ?being the worst ever? and ?they hate the fans? because they made something they don?t want, but they can?t fathom simply not buying it. This is a huge problem in the LEGO community right now, believe it or not.
