Does ebay even really have the traffic to justify the fees anymore? My bro was showing me how many views he's getting and it's nothing. Back when I would list shit on there (well over a year ago), the views were so much more. Is it just that the interest in this shit is drying up or is it something nefarious, like ebay is burying his listings because they want people to pay to "feature" them or because of his "substandard seller" status? The poor guy went from a "top-rated seller" to substandard in a couple of months. That's bullshit he's sitting there with 100% positive feedback and satisfied customers, but is somehow "substandard."
I guess he's going to set up accounts at ebid and others. I'll let you all know if they seem worthwhile. Yes, eBay still has plenty of traffic. I looked over your brothers listings. Let him know that he has to take better pictures. He needs to quit using the camera flash, and find a way to shine a different source of bright lighting onto his items/photos. Folks aren't big into reading anymore, so good photos are more important than ever. And yes, eBay pushes the listings of their top rated sellers higher up in the search results, even without paying for a promoted listing. He's at a disadvantage with his new lower rating. I'm not an expert on the eBay algorithm, but I know getting views/watchers in the first 48 hours makes a big difference. I recommend logging into your account and adding every one of your brothers listings to your watch list. This will help boost your brothers listings in general search results. My wife watches every single listing of mine from her account. It seems to help. He may also try a mixture of auction and fixed price listings. Some buyers strictly look at one or the other, so having a mixture of both could draw in more views.

I no longer have an ebay account, but I can always sign up for a new one just to watch his listings like you suggested. I think maybe I'm also going to tell him that if he just wants to get rid of his Star Wars shit in particular, to throw away the packaging and sell them in loose lots so he can save on shipping and start auctions lower. It doesn't seem like people care about packaging on the stuff he's listing.

Thanks! I'll straight copy this and email it to him. It's a big help, thanks again! Things have changed since I sold there. I remember the selling tool constantly telling me to add more to the description. I told him to make sure to describe the item's condition and fill up the description box...I've been giving him bad advice.

This applies to most newer toys, TBH. The retro o-ring stuff is a good example, with loose listings commanding a comparable price to sealed examples. I think it really comes down to the fact that everyone assumes that sealed stuff is worth more, meaning more leave it sealed, which in turn means there are actually more sealed examples available than loose- you could say that loose is more "rare" :/
...also, I feel like you forgot "clean screws" in your sig. For me, low price stuff, I'm opening up and selling loose to save on shipping. Because the packaging on cheap stuff doesn't add much value, if any. On the higher priced items, I definitely keep sealed. TVC stuff, often better to keep sealed. Marvel Legends, sometimes better to open it up.

i stumbled on "ebluejay" but it was strange because you could have your item basically put on hold indefinitely by a buyer. im not sure if it's around still but i would check and see a bunch of stuff for way less than it would go on ebay.
struck me as the skeevy type of place skeevy people go to avoid paying fees that are created to protect their money for everyone involved in the transaction. so my vote is "no." |

Be careful what you post about ebay, their CEO might just send you a box of spiders and cockroaches ...
