I've put off posting this for a long time. Now I'm just generally bewildered and I want to know- why all the hate? Why are so many posters so hot to belittle others? What is it that compels so many to be so immediately disrespectful and generally nasty in their responses? Not just to me, but to each other?
I belong to several message boards. There's a good deal of friction but NOTHING like I see here. There's the basic explanation that we can't see each other's faces or hear each other's tone of voice, but it's more than that. I've been told about half a dozen times over the past month that my OPINIONS are flat wrong. If I describe a personal experience I'm told that it's wrong or I get a dish of high-and-mighty from people who don't even disagree with me. It's not that I have a problem with someone having a different opinion or idea or POV. It's that SO MANY of the posters here are just plain dicks about things when there's absolutely no call for it. Some of the more hip among you know me and what I do. You understand where my perspective comes from and are very friendly and easy to get along with, even when we have completely opposing viewpoints. Others would probably change their attitudes instantly if they knew, but I'm not going to play that card. I'd rather see people simply govern themselves civilly without preconceptions. An ASTOUNDING number of people here are just plain spoiling for an argument- to the point where you'll create one where none exists. I'm not gonna start a rant about basement-dwelling virgins or who's smarter than who. I know I'm no slouch in the brains department, but I don't have to reassure myself by belittling others or being nasty. One of the great things about GI Joe has always been (to me at least) the team mentality. Everyone brings something to the table. I guess it's just youthful naivete, but I hoped that the Joe fans would be the types to try to consider other viewpoints rather than just dashing off dismissive, insulting tirades or picking net fights. A couple of times I've had people lace into me and then tell me to lighten up. Honey and vinegar and all of that. Or better yet, I get the "it's sad that you take a message board so seriously" from people who are far more active than I here. I challenge you all to hold yourselves to a higher, more civilized standard. I know that this is the internet and I'm probably asking way too much, but if I reach just one person this will have been worth it. Put simply, if you don't have anything constructive, civil, or just plain NOT mean to add, don't respond. I don't envy the mods here because they have the task of trying to sort all of this out and try to keep this place accessible to newcomers. I HOPE this doesn't get immediately shut down or deleted. This isn't intended to piss anyone off and it's not intended to start a flame war. I haven't named any names. I'm not personally attacking anyone.

I have enough problems in 'real life', so I come here to, believe it or not, to enjoy myself.
Trouble is, all the sniping, name calling and plain nastiness in the wake of the film got too much and I wanted to 'leave'. Maybe some people can 'suck it up'... maybe I should just 'get over it'... but I can't. Why should I have too? Just because someone else is thick-skinned and can take all manner of crap, they think everyone can. An insult doesn't matter because it's 'impersonal' and 'long-distance'?? So I got so cheesed off with having my intelligence/integrity/whatever questioned I wanted to leave. Some people convinced me that wasn't the thing to do though, and I myself thought that nobody will give a damn whether I'm here or not anyway. Guess I'll stick it out for a while longer and see if certain parties can actually abide by the rules they agreed to when signing up here. That's all I want.

^^^I agree with this and have thoughts of leaving myself, with the game blowing up and ROC sniping leaving a bad taste in my mouth, just wish it didn't have to be like this here.

I think I do ok for the most part, but there have been a few times where I look back and think I may have come across in a dickish way that wasn't called for. I could always stand to do better. |
