too true. Numbers don't mean squat if you've got better tactics and strategy. Or even training. 500 Paras beat 1500 Argentines at Goose Green because an elite, highly trained professional force was fighting a bunch of badly trained conscripts who didn't want to be there.

Generally, with these exercises, if they are scored, it isn't really scoring as in team blue gets more points than team red, but more of a rating of how units performed specific tasks. Some of the biggest exercises in terms of number of personnel involved, the scoring/rating was only on the headquarters and command and control. Not that I have seen this, but in theory, companies, platoons, and squads could completely hose up their tactics but if the BN and higher made the right decisions and led their units correctly, they would be scored well, with the assumption that the small units would fix themselves if they screwed the exercises.
So, I was a little surprised to hear that the US Marines were "defeated" by the Royal Marines. I was curious what the context was. Knowing that the USMC is a much larger combined arms team, I was curious of context of the exercise. |

Knowing that the USMC is a much larger combined arms team, I was curious of context of the exercise. For the past two months, the 7th Marine Regiment at Twentynine Palms, California has been training the Royal Marines 40 Commando, because these Commandos will make up the newly-formed Littoral Response Group (South), and begin operations east of the Suez Canal. LRG South is expected to be functional next year with the addition of amphibious ships and aircraft. The conclusion of these months of training is known as GREEN DAGGER 21, which was five days of warfighting with an allied team (composed of the USMC, Canada, United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands and UK) joining forces to fight their adversary team, made up entirely of Marines of the 5th Marine Regiment from Camp Pendleton, California. The exercise in the Mojave Desert focused around three urban sprawls which were defended by the allied forces, the largest of which consisting of 1,200 buildings. The LRG won decisive battles early on and gained ground from their enemy, but then the situation changed as the US Marines pushed into allied territory. The Royal Marines and their allies responded with raids behind enemy lines to stop further counter-attacks. The exercise finished with a last-minute "enemy" assault which was repelled, leaving the allied forces in control of over two thirds of the entire battlefield. Their training completed, the Royal Marines can consider themselves "Victorious", because they are now trained and prepared for their new role with LRG South.

Well AWOL, that video is an improvement over the first video you posted featuring that pair of knuckleheads, "The Podcast of the Lotus Eaters".
What is it with these private citizens in the United Kingdom and their tabloid headlines? "Defense Military Report" is a civilian video channel for educational and documentary material edited in the United Kingdom. "Royal Marines forced U.S Marines to surrender in exercise after eliminating almost the entire unit"? What a load of rubbish... at least the video used real camera recordings of the training courtesy of the US Marine Corps, and somebody read the official press release notes in that video segment. Capt. Zachary Colvin, Communications and Strategy Director with the Marine Air Ground Combat Center stated, “‘Winners’ are never determined. This exercise does not provide an opportunity to ‘surrender,’ ‘keep score,’ or ‘reset.’ The objective of the exercise is to heighten unit performance and increase readiness." So we know that there was never any "surrender", and nobody "almost eliminated an entire unit". Is this title another example of YouTube clickbait?
