So guys I just want some honest opinions. I know the Tank represents a certain cross section of the world and it may be a biased one but at this point any help is good help.
Currently I'm unemployed. I live in Florida and I've been unemployed for almost two years, minus a few small jobs here and there. I have an AS Degree in Digital Media Production which included Audio/Video Editing, Web Design and I have some experience in Instructional Design. I've been trying to turn my hobby of making Customs into a career just like Frenzy Rumble and Jin have done. I realize this will take awhile to build the recognition that these guys have or a customer base so I'm not expecting this to be an overnight success. There are basically no good jobs left in Florida especially in my career area. So I'm thinking about going back to school problem is I'm not sure I can get enough Financial aid/Loans to cover the cost and if I did what should I go for? Considering Industrial Design since I really want to spend my career building models or making toys. Also considering Graphic Design or continuing with the Digital Arts. Another possibility is a degree in Creative Writing. But is any of this worth it. I have 20 grand in Student loans now will another 40-60 in debt leave me any better off? Should I just keep doing what I'm doing and hope for the best? I don't expect you guys to have all the answers just looking for some input to consider in my decision making process.

Go for it. You have absolutely nothing to lose by the sound of it. It can only improve your chances of finding a job. Start out at a community college so you don't pile up as much debt. While you're there, you'll no doubt meet some interesting people who might have a job or position that you'll be great for.
What's the alternative? Being out of work for another year? Picking up the night shift at the Burger King drive through? Go for it, dude! |

Having a degree will usually give you more options for a career (although maybe not your ideal one) I'm not sure where you are considering shcool, but there may be some other educational opportunities that cost less than what you mentioned.

I have 11 months and I can have my BA in Technical Business Management. Would cost me about $6-$10k and I haven't done it because I don't want the extra $$debt$$ especially in this economy. That's just me though. Only debt I have is my house and monthly bills that come with it.

I'm in IT and I can tell you if we had two applicants with exactly the same skill level, and one had a BS and the other did not, the one with the BS would get the nod.
Having a BS will only help you in the job market. |

Yes. Most empolyers care that you have the piece of paper more than your experience. I am 36 credits away from getting my Bachelor's in International Business and I am out of Finicial Aid money at the moment. I have been trying to pay my loans down and find a way to finish my degree for the better part of two years now. You can generally make double what you are making now with a 4 year degree.

Absolutly. More marketability and most higher end jobs require it. My profession won't look at you unless you have one. Best thing I did in my life.

I would say unless you are going to go back for something that will get you a high paying job, it's probably not worth it. The chance of a creative writing degree actually paying for itself is really low. The chance of an engineering degree paying for itself is really high. So, if you think you can hack it as an engineer or some other similar field, then go for it. Otherwise I wouldn't.

No Dependents currently. (Divorced) No Wife Currently. I'm 34 1/2 My parents & I share all of our expense. I've been managing to make about a grand a month off of doing side work, selling customs etc.. which pays my car payment and my share of the rent. My Degree options are all Creative.. Really considering Industrial Design.
