I have a friend who teaches some internet classes at a local community college.
One of their class assignments was to watch the film "Leaving Las Vegas" and relate examples of it to alcoholism. One of her students just cut and pasted a review of the film and didn't even bother to remove the url from the bottom of the page. 100% plagiarism. And not just plagiarism. Idiotic imbecilic America's-Most-Stupid-style plagiarism. But my friend just gave her a C. Said she can't get a reputation as a hard professor or no one will sign up for her class. And the student had the audacity to complain about the C! |

It does, but the lack of security and direction doesn't. Thanks for the words, though.

I understand your not wanting to teach. Administration would enable you to stay in education but make a more meaningful difference but not get mired by being stuck in a classroom. It would be a way to stay in the game and still use your hard earned degree.

Sorry to hear you quit. I taught college composition and literature and although there wasn't any pressure to modify my teaching methods or to conform to an arbitrary standard of practice, I know how much work goes into a job that pays little and offers little reward other than what you mentioned. Now I'm a pilot and don't have to take work home with me, but I miss academia. Teaching is great when the kids are interested and motivated but I rarely had to deal with discipline problems and I always had the final authority to fail or withdraw students.
PS: Do you really hate The Great Gatsby? That's a remarkable book. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 08-10-2009 at 09:48 PM.. |

I teach high school, and have taught college...I know how it is. In my case, though, I am lucky...I work at a traditional, fairly conservative private high school, with excellent students and an administration that stands behind its faculty. I get to be who I am, teach without moderating myself, etc.
My point is, if you aren't ready to let go of teaching completely, have you thought of looking into private high schools? Pay might be less, but the job is better. That is, of course, if you were at a public school to begin with...sounds likely, I guess. Furthermore, I have utter control over my curricula, my choice of texts, etc etc etc. Maybe look into that. Some private schools just let you teach. They don't force anything on you.

True. I never wanted to teach secondary education due to the lack of autonomy, long work hours, poor pay and rampant juvenility.
