I just discovered this thread. I was reading through it and especially loved the goaltending breakdown for the northwest division...I pissed my self laughing! does this dude even watch hockey? I would have to rate Backstrom #3 ahead of Khabibullin in Edmonton though. take yer pick, Luongo or Kiprusoff 1 and 2. Will be interesting to watch this year. I was very impressed, but not surprised by Nabokov in preseason play. Lookin good for our frenzy feeding friends to the south. Go Canucks Go!

As for Backstorm, that's where the joke ends. Number #3 in the NHL maybe. Some guy's opinion in an article or toy collector's forum is not going to stop him from being one of the elite goaltenders in the league. Either way, a lot of very good goalies in the NW division. |

Was watching some sports casters break downs division by division, and they rated the nw one of the toughest to call. If Edmonton and the Wild can get some scoring, its gonna be a tough race. I think Calgary is the best rounded between scoring and goaltending, but Kippers is either good or he isn't, there's seems to be no middle ground with this guy. Hows yer preseason look so far without Gaborik? Like what you see? Surprisingly the Canucks haven't played the Wild in preseason, maybe they should keep the exhibition games divisional? food for thought. Liked watching my boys play the Sharks and Ducks, those were good games. Will see how they do in cowtown tonight.

I see the Wild and Oilers having some growing pains. I think the Wild will struggle a bit to learn the new system the new coach is trying to teach. There's been a lot of injures already so the team has not been able to practice the system much with most of the regulars. Its a little chaotic right now for the Wild. The faster these two teams adjust to their new coaches the better chance they have to surprise people this season.
I agree that the Flames have the best all around team, but both them and the Canucks it will depend on the performance of their goalies. I see Luongo rebounding and having a great year. As far as Kiprusoff goes, we'll have to wait and see which guy shows up this year. I'm honestly overjoyed to have Havlat instead of Gaborik this year for a number of reasons. First he wants to be here. He has much more charisma and rapport with the media and fans already and is much more well spoken. Gaborik's radio TV/radio spots always sounded like he was mumbling and bored. The same as he sounded when talking to fans and the media when he wasn't hiding from them. Gaborik has speed and a great wrist shot, but don't ask him to score on a breakaway to make the players on his line better. Gaborik will have trouble finding chemistry on a line in NY because its all about him scoring and having the puck. On the Wild I see Havlat scoring as many goals as Gaborik would on that team, plus his line mates goal totals will also increase as he is a great playmaker as well. Havlet is not scared or above scraping in the corners for the puck. He may not score as many goals as Gaborik in the long run, but he is a much more versatile player. Havlet signed a very cap friendly contract that will allow the Wild to pick up another scoring winger later this season or next summer. The Wild should be able to have cap room next summer to get a clear number 2 center if they still need one. Not so with Gaborik's $7 to 8 million contract. Lastly the injury factor. Gaborik is still having problems with his groin this preseason after having another surgery last year and sitting out most of last season again. He has injured his groin playing hackeysack for crying out loud. If someone breathes on him wrong he misses a game. Havlat on the other hand seems to have left his injury problems behind after a strong season and playoffs. I'm not an expert, but I remember most of his problems were from a shoulder injury that he actually got from playing in a game and from physical contact. I'm excited to see what young players emerge this season that haven't shown much the last couple of years under the old system. Last edited by Captain Carstein; 09-26-2009 at 07:04 PM.. |

What the F*** are they thinking? Cheep (or at least relatively), reliable, 3rd best pre-season goal/assist tally, game winning goal, good defensively (heck, he bailed out Regheir at one point for heaven's sake!). I expected Iginla, Moss, and Borque to keep spots, but McGrattan and Sjostrom? Neither of them did ANYTHING on RW in the pre-season. VERY dumb move. Not sure what I'm more upset about. Keeping Macelhinny as backup goal, or ditching Fleury. |

(OK, probably not rival, but we'd be a decently close second) Exactly the problem. Hopefully the Kiprusoff of 04 |

Awh, that's cute. You guys were all WTF when Fluery showed up and now you're all sad to see him go. I guess he was such a blip on my radar this time, I didn't even get to form an opinion.
I agree that the main thing that keeps the Flames being one of the elite Western Conference teams is consistency. They've been up and down for the last how many years? |

Flames will take NW, they have too much depth not too. Canucks will be close and have the better tender but can't support that much talent....but hell, Flames always surprise me w/ how they flop (just like my Sharks)....and Ollie's a bitch

Don't talk to me about that. We were chasing within 6 points of the wings and sharks at one point last season. Then we fell apart. sigh. Streakyness is VERY irritating. Quote:
Both of our teams are focused on the first line with a decent depth of scoring this year, but not like the wings of the past few seasons. Also, depends on how the front line holds up. If iggy and Olie flop, we're dead. As for Ollie? If he plays like the pre-season we're golden. if he plays like the end of last year, we're screwed. |

then the Flames are screwed by your logic as Luongo is the better of the 2. as said, I think CAL has more firepower up front than VAN and that will be the deciding factor.
