Anyone here have experience shipping a VERY large item?
I'm trying to get a quote for something that is 48 x 36 x 24, and probably 30 pounds. Anyone resell the barge a couple years ago, or maybe the Flagg? I think this may be bigger (in cubic inches) than either of those. I'm really at a loss here, at the moment. I was planning to do local pick up only on this, but someone really wants it shipped to NY.

Never done it myself, but I have received large items (car hood, for example) via DHL. You're looking for freight shipment rather than parcel shipment.

Yes dude, I'm linking this thread to show what I'm talking about:
https://www.hisstank.com/forum/5219027-post1.html About halfway down the post is a huge command center I built for a guy in Texas. It was built to go into five or so boxes, as it's essentially the size of a small dresser. The largest box housing the main building was in the neighborhood of 5'×3'×3' and weighed somewhere around 45 lbs. (Its made of wood). I don't remember the exact cost of that box specifically, but I do know that all of them together ran close to $700. You may want to get an in person quote at the PO, it sounds as though yours should be much lower. Also, UPS and FedEx are always much higher than USPS.

After reading your message I figured I maybe did something wrong with the shipping calculator and decided to speak with someone at the actual post office. So, they tell me that shipping large boxes "isn't really something we do" at the post office. I gave them the dimensions, and they told me that my box was too big to ship. "I hate to send you to UPS, because they'll eat you alive in fees, but I really don't see any other way" Guess the buyer is SOL and it'll remain local p/u only.

If you're selling it on Ebay, you at least get a discount on shipping services. I sold my old BMF and the box was 38" x 27" x 10". Only cost $45.
You can try Pirateship to see how low it gets. You can also ship via Greyhound. The catch is the recipient has to pick it up at the bus station. |
