I had an auction that ended on Monday. I set 3 days as the turn around for expect payment. In my opinion if you are going to bid on an item you should be prepared to pay immediately. The buyer messaged me and says he will have the money on Saturday and that he hopes I can wait for him. Part of me feels like cancelling the sale and relisting - mostly based on principal. It took him two days to reach out and then is asking me to extend my wait for money/shipping etc another 2 days.
What are your guys thoughts on proper ebay etiquette? Am I off base? Is it absurd to not expect payment within the time you posted in the auction? |

No, in today’s age, payment should be within 24 hours for auctions and at point of sale for Buy It Now. If he didn’t reach out to you beforehand, I wouldn’t feel any guilt about canceling the sale.

Sellers should stick to whatever terms are listed in the auction. If someone cannot pay what they agreed to, they shouldn't bid up the price on items.

Agree with the above. Barring exception made for expressed prior arrangement between buyer and seller, sellers should feel free to stick to the standards they lay out in their auctions.

I agree with all of the above in regards to etiquette, but not in regards to cancelling the listing- at least, not without a case. The main reasons there are:
A) The buyer will still be able to leave feedback and you can probably imagine that it won't be good. However, if a UPI case closes without payment, that option is no longer available to them. B) Cancellations made not at the buyer's request count as a " defect". If you get a few of those in a year, your final value fees go up to 15%. This happened to me for similar reasons last year, and it sucked. Bad. It also took nearly a year for them to go away because it's percentage based. I recommend opening a case asap, and if the buyer pays, ship as normal and add them to your blocked list. If not, they get a strike, and can't screw you. Buyers really have sellers over a barrel on eBay, sadly. |

Thanks everyone. Glad to know I am not being unreasonable with my thinking. I appreciate the info on Ebay and how it works against sellers. Both of the auction winners have 100% positive feedback - I reached out to them both and will give them the benefit of the doubt. I am not hard up for the money but was going to use it to do some purchasing of items for myself. The lack of communication and respect is what really irritates me - if you don't have the funds don't bid.

It's probably worth mentioning that literally the only way to get anything other than positive feedback on eBay is by being a seller who gets a bad feedback from a buyer. Buyers have been totally immune to bad feedback for years now. Sellers have no way to leave neutral or negative feedback for a buyer and if a seller leaves a positive feedback with notes saying it's actually not positive then eBay will wipte that feedback text out. The only things a seller can ever do is report a buyer for violating policy, block a buyer, and file a non-paying bidder strike (which only sticks if they don't pay within 2 or 3 days of the NPB being filed). You will never hear back from eBay on any outcome of any violation reports or whether or not the buyer finally gets banned for too many NPB strikes. It might be just like that button in the elevator to close the doors...doesn't actually get wired to anything but it makes you feel in control when you press it.

Ninjaku is on point here. I don't do too many auctions anymore, and this is one of the reasons why. For me, after 24 hours I send them a reminder e-mail, after 48 hours and still no payment/response, I'd open an unpaid item case. Then if no payment by the time the close case option becomes available, close the case and be done with it.
