I've been wondering about this lately. It's just a fun little, relatively inexpensive, hobby. Some of it's nostalgia. I'm not the most creative person, and I used to post on joedios to get those juices flowing, but until I get a better camera and computer, that's been shelved. I don't do a lot of internet shopping, and I still like going to the stores for the hunt. Plus, it keeps me young and not as jaded and cynical as some friends have gotten.

I got into a bit with some folks on Facebook when someone asked if something was worth buying and said "if you want it buy it why asks strangers what you want to get. If your asking your in the hobby for the wrong reasons." It pushed some folks buttons to the point of insults, etc. Funny stuff. Anyways My question is how many of these people do you think are even in it to collect or just to try to make a dollar off it? The same thing happened a couple months ago and I made a comment about it and the dude hasnt been on the forum since. So either I scared him off or he wanted to make a quick buck. Using this example I personally find those that wake up one morning and are like I need a hobby ill collect toys or those that dont know what to buy cause they are not really a fan of the series then your heart isnt in it for the right reasons but for reasons like monetary you will collect for a year then will sell it all 6 of your collection on ebay.
I see some address my comments about it with "havnt you ever asked for help" or "If I dont have a lot of money I want the best that I can get with what I got to spend." They usually dont like my replies of if you dont have money to buy a toy most likely should find another hobby, etc. Anyways I have asked for help when it comes to the best figures to get articulation wise, etc but never if it is worth it. I always have bought something because I think it is cool and want it for me or because I like the series. I dont really do transformers so wont buy it even if it is worth something. I have bought for trade bait though. I just dont get that I guess. That is just my opinion but I get amazed at how offended people get when you point this out even the "real" collectors that defend these peeps. Just a quick jotted down thought. Personally I don't collect for value. I have a stock portfolio for that. I collect to make it up to the little kid inside of me that had to; leave toys behind on store shelves, never got that thing I wanted from Santa, broke or lost toys, only had 1 of every damned bad guy troop from storm troopers to Bats. I only collect OT Star Wars, 1970s-late 80s Marvel, ARAh related Joe, Season 1 Sunbow Transformers, and MOTU CLassics. Basically I only collect stuff from my childhood years, either modern versions or vintage. I am interested in other peoples' opinions when it comes some toys. Some folks have a keen eye for things that I may overlook, but I'll never actually ask for help (I'm a man for crying out loud) but will read through pages of a thread to get the full scope of opinions. Then make up my own mind.

I think he just meant sincere collector/fan vs just a straight up scalper purely in it for the speculation. I don't think he was judging this guys level of fandom.

About 15 years ago my brother and I made up a pretty basic game with our old G.I. Joe collection in an attempt to recapture the simple joy of playing with toys like we did as kids, albeit with the structure, strategy, progression, and randomness that makes a tabletop game or RPG appealing. We've refined it a bunch over the years, though we've only actually played a handful of times. But that's really what got me back into collecting Joes, trying to expand my roster of playable characters.

You know, I never used to give a shit about people asking for values or scalpers in general, but then I came across a guy actively checking ebay price histories for a Joe item right there in the store. The "professional ebay sellers" are now interested in this shit, and that pisses me off. I hate artificial shortages caused by scalpers. It's one thing to compete against other collectors for this shit, but to also have to beat fucks from outside the hobby who are buying what amounts to them as just another commodity to the punch takes the fun out of it. I keep thinking about buying toys as a kid and how my only competition back then were other kids. Nowadays though, these kiddos never even see the fucking things in the aisles because adults with credit cards cleaned the shit out at 6am.

Look up and old TSR roll playing game called Star Frontiers Alpha Dawn. I really like their gaming structure. It uses percentile dice only. I always thought their rule base would work well for Joes. The rule book is up for free on the internet. A second set (Night Hawks) went into vehicles in combat, both ground/atmospheric and outer space craft space. You guys may really enjoy adapting it for Joes.

I think Cross Country and stljoe pretty much nailed the reasons why I collect. For me alot of it revolves around nostalgia - being able to get the ARAH figs/vehicles I was never able to get as a kid, re-acquiring the figs/vehicles I had as a kid and once I get them being able to unlock long lost memories from my youth. It's also a pretty harmless hobby - just something I do in my freetime, I don't spend too much money on it (I do splurge sometimes). I try to keep myself pretty grounded as a collector - being a purist in the fact it's a hobby I enjoy and I like connecting with fellow collectors. I do hate scalpers, price gouging and inflated prices but that always makes the hunt a little more fun and challenging.
