The real secret of a good leader is simply that they actually give a shit about other things besides just their own interests. They care about people/causes/philosophies/issues beyond how they're personally affected. Leaders tend to be "big picture" people, who see beyond the here and now. And then they also have the organizational acumen, the genuine aptitude for problem-solving, and the ability to recognize skill in others and delegate accordingly in order to get stuff done. Most importantly, a real leader--a good leader--takes fucking responsibility and doesn't look to make excuses, whine, lie and pass the buck.

In my opinion, leadership is setting the example. Particularly in the armed forces, people think setting the example means wearing the uniform correctly and being in good shape, but to me, it is that plus being technically and tactically proficient, and treating people right. I feel like my successes in leadership roles later in life came about because of the really shitty leaders I served under when I was young, and I learned how not to treat people.
