Coach Fired After Parents Drink Beers
Heard this on the radio this morning. Coach threw an end-of-season BBQ at his own home, on his own dime, and another parent brought some beer. No kid touched the beer, the coach didn't touch the beer. No parent got drunk. Another parent tattled to the school board and the Coach got fired. WHAT THE HELL!?!? You have got to be kidding me. That's the stupidest thing I've heard. From other things I've read (this is all over alot of discussion boards), this was a very well-respected coach who did alot for the kids. Probably pretty sure that the parent who tattled was mad at the coach for his kid probably not having enough playing time or something. Those of you who have coached, which I have, will know that kind of parent. Should the other parents have brought beer? Maybe not, but it's not that big a deal. I've been to plenty of parties with kids present where there was beer. It's no big deal. But to fire the coach? Utterly ridiculous. And people wonder why there's a lack of available coaches. They get no to very little pay, and have to deal with crap like this. No wonder no one wants to do it.

This is probably going to come down to how much pull the coach has with the higher-ups. If they want to pull a "letter of the law" sort of thing, his firing is probably justified as I'm sure there's a regulation that no alcohol is to be present at team functions.
However they could probably get away with a slap on the wrist just as easily as a firing. It really does sound like someone with an axe to grind was out to get him in trouble. Either that or a holier-than-thou overprotective parent. |

Probably the same parent that doesn't think they should keep score during games.

unfortunatly this is the way of the world these days. Parents and gaurdians are very over protective these days, I cant blame them of course since it is their children but to me it just seems to go to levels of ridiculousness sometimes where the smallest most insignificant thing turns into "WHY WONT ANYONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN". Kids back in the day werent as sheltered, spoiled and over protected as today yet they came out ok.

Youngest, don't even bother keeping track. Oldest, hell yeah you keep the score. The younger they are, the less attention you pay to the score/scoring. My age level, when coaching, we paid attention to the scoring but not the actual score. So the kids knew when they were scored against (this was Football) but at the end of the game when asked how many TDs they had score or what the final score was, the answer was "a couple but it doesn't matter what matters is that you..." (and would go on from there).

I'd like to know who these people are who think a BBQ without beer is a good idea. What's next, no hot dogs allowed?
On second thought, I wouldn't like to know who these people are. They sound like boring, stick-in-the-mud a-holes. |

If it was a school function, there should not have been beer involved. School rules. However, if another parent brought it, then the coach shouldn't even really be scolded for it. In all honesty, the degree to which you have to "watch yourself" is worse for a teacher, particularly a male. Trust me, I'm a male teacher. It sometimes feels more like a task than a job I can enjoy anymore.

The BBQ wasn't an official school function at all. The coach did it on his own, and had done it every year he'd been coaching. The school board is trying to say that because he was the coach and his team was there, and it was a BBQ to celebrate the team's season, that made it an official school function and subject to the school's rules.
