MUST READ: Larry Correia's Monster Hunter series. First book is Monster Hunters International. Larry is a gun expert, so you get very accurate action scenes, combined with a surprisingly fun story. Larry is also a Joe fan (and was portrayed as a character last year in one of the comics). His style fits very well with Joe-styled action, in fact, as you can find yourself drifting off into how each character should be made into a figure, what kind of squads of characters could you make on your own, and so forth.
If you like MHI, he also has other ongoing series, including the Grimnoir Chronicles, which puts magic users into an alternate post-WWI historical setting. And also books based on modern military action. An unrelated series I'd recommend (if you like sci-fi naval combat) is a series by David Feintuch, that starts with a book titled "Midshipman's Hope"

I liked "Empire Of The East" by Fred Saberhagen. In it a young peasant boy has his family destroyed by the local evil lord, and gets involved in a search for a thing called "The Elephant" that will end the evil lords rule... He finds the Elephant, and it turns out to be a 25th century tank!. I can also recommend "Agent Of Chaos" by Norman Spinrad. In this the world is ruled over by a dictatorship and there are those trying to overthrow it. Its' facinating reading and has futuristic, but very believeable, details that make it worth reading.
Both are in downloadable ebook form. |

"The Forever War" by Joe Haldeman Also not sure if your into thriller type fiction but Nelson Demille writes great, Id suggest- "Up Country" it follows the character in "The Generals Daughter" which he also wrote. |

Curious if anyone has any good recommendations in regards to fantasy or science fiction novels or series'. I trend towards military themes in either genre; evidenced by my love of Joe.
I love George R.R. Martin's "Song of Fire and Ice Series" and almost anything Glen Cook has written (the Black Company series being my holy grail). Really enjoyed Joe Aborcrombie's recent series, "The First Law". Also R. Scott Bakker's "Prince of Nothing Series" is excellent. That should give you a taste of what I like. What am I missing? Any suggestions? As an aside, how great would it be if there was Joe fiction similar to the Star Wars universe of novels? Crap or not, I'd read them all. Thanks in advance for any replies. Always appreciate good fiction recommendations! I'm not sure if they would interest you, but I might suggest Harry Turtledove's series of books. They essentially deal with alternative history/science fiction history with a military aspect. I haven't read them, but as a former bookstore employee, there are a lot of books he's written so I'm sure you may find one you like. |
