Sci-Fi military, Karen Traviss' Star Wars Republic Commando novels are pretty good.
David and Leigh Eddings is simple, but still entertaining reads (except their latest series). The Redemption of Althalus is good stuff and Regina's Song was a great book.

For great military SF check out David Weber's Honor Harrington series.
World War Z by Max Brooks is great and a quick read. Cell by Stephen King is another nice quick read. If you like "hard" sci fi, that is sci fi with a lot of real mathematics and science thrown in I recommend Stephen Baxter, particularly The Time Ships. |

And there are always comics:
Here's a list of collected series you can get at any bookstore: Batman: Year One Watchmen Crisis on Infinite Earths Joker by Azzarello and Bermejo (If you liked the Dark Knight movie and Ledger's Joker you will love this) The Walking Dead by Kirkman |

Cell by King was a good one. I've always liked Insomnia and Bag of Bones by King. Looking forward to The Dome when that comes out.

Robert Heinlein!! Pretty much anything, but Starship Troopers and Stranger in a Strange Land should be required reading, as well as Time Enough for Love.
Neil Gaiman is great as well. American Gods, enough said. Michael Crichton is a fun author, his books are always better than the movies they are made into. I particularly like Jurassic Park, Congo, and Prey. I disliked Next. Orson Scott Card is wonderful. Read atleast Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow, but there are many more beyond those. But seriously, Stranger in a Strange Land. Favorite. Book. Ever. I would add 'The Moon is a Harsh Mistress' to the Heinlein list. I would add 'Neverwhere' to the Gaimann list (I also like Anansi Boys), American Gods is one of my absolute faves - I read it a couple times a year. Crighton's books are great, 'Timeline' being my favorite Card is good, Ender's Game is a classic. I might add William Gibson's 'Neuromancer', and 'Difference Engine'; the Dune books by Frank Herbert, and Joe Haldeman's 'Forever War' Oh and 'The Dark Tower' (and the Stand) have a great deal of SF and Fantasy elements as well. Gaiman's short stories are good. And I'm not a short story fan. Have yet to be able to complete a single volume of King's short stories.
Graveyard Book, though meant for younger readers, was a very good book. Neverwhere was great. Stardust was a good read. American Gods was awesome. Anansi Boys was a good read as well. Tad Williams' Caliban's Hour (or Caliban's Song, can't remember) is a very short but very good read.

The Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell
The Space Marine series by Ian Douglas The Clone series by Steven L. Kent The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher The Hollows series by Kim Harrison The Silver Crown by Bill Bridges Breathe Deeply by Don Bassingthwaite The last two are based on White Wolf's Werewolf: The Apocolypse. I know WW has moved on to a new game world but this was something I wish the had developed into a toy line. |

Robert E Howard's Conan books
Edgar Rice Burroughs Mars and Venus books as well as the first few Tarzan books. There are a bunch of Old/Middle English books I would recommend, but I don't know if there would be any interest. If you wanna learn more about older Persian culture and history I would recommend Legend of Seyavash and Conference of Birds. I think anything by Chaucer and Edmund Spenser are wonderful for the most part. Laxdaela Saga, Chretien de Troyes, and Song of Roland are all great as well. All wonderful takes on the Nordic/Icelandic and romance myths and legends.
