I ran across a new type of 3D printer that has some interesting abilities...
I'm thinking of what something like this could do for the toy industry down the road.

Unfortunately not much. Most of modern toy design is already digital and designed to the micrometer (which unfortunately is also why they now miss obvious angular articulation problems instead. So derp), and 3d printing costs way more and has unreliable texturing.
Also 3d printing methods like this requires a specific mix of material that can be 3d printed, which is restrictive in and of itself and prevents re sculpting in the physical design phase. What 3d printing is good at is giving an immediate prototype that can be shown and tested, but considering most companies don't even do an angular articulation V test on their action figures, I'm not sure it really matters. |

I think the idea that this machine can print objects like this is extremely impressive and will help pave way for something amazing. We already have businesses that you purchase a pattern and print the item in your home so in 10-15 years I can see businesses like toy companies doing the same where hunting down items in physical stores won't be necessary and every innovation brings us closer to that.

It means using a computer without double checking if it works in the real world can have akward consequences when it is rushed into production.
It happens a lot more than it should because companies rush things and when it happens it usually doesn't get fixed or redesigned because 'BUDGET reasons' caused by said forced rushing. . . . .Sigh, it's a fun world. |

looks like the host created a shape ways design of the jet car from the movie "buckaroo banzai across the eight dimension."
pretty neat design. I would absolutely loved one of those vehicles in 1:18 scale. one of my all time favorite movies. got to see it in the theater. looks like you can get on in 1:25 scale, but for $275 I'll continue to pine. Last edited by Dragasses; 08-02-2017 at 01:07 PM.. |

I read an article about advances in affordable 3-d printing in metal... if it can produce pieces suitable for molds the cost barrier for making production stuff will fall considerably.
