IS THIS REAL LIFE? O_O
I Can't believe this stuff actually happened!!! -So I was looking through U.S. military trucks and I find this as listed as the general purpose heavy military truck: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M939_Truck -But then I see an amazing contradiction. The military has what is essentially the SAME truck, but an Army exclusive vehicle: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family...tical_Vehicles -The Marines ALSO have an equivalent truck that's almost exactly the same specs, but released a year or two later: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medium...le_Replacement -------------------------------- And that's not even the end. I dug slightly further and I found that the Marines and the Army have essentially the same truck 10 wheel truck listed under different names for the exact same DROPS cargo role!! Drops role: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demoun..._Pickup_System The trucks: The Marine version: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oshkos...lacement_(LVSR) The Army version: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palletized_load_system ------------------ EVEN BETTER, these trucks are successor designs to essentially THE SAME 8 WHEEL TRUCK, the (HEMTT) again listed under different names between the Marines and the Army. The trucks: Marine version (By the way, it's about as out of service as the Humvee, which is not really. . . . ): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logistics_Vehicle_System U.S. Army Version: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_...Tactical_Truck -By the way, The HEMTT replaced this strange looking truck: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M520_Goer -------------------------------- For fun. -Anyways apparently the attempt to replace this truck: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M54_5-ton_6x6_truck -HAS TAKEN OVER 40 YEARS!!!! -It first spawned this truck: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M809_s...-ton_6x6_truck -Then this truck: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M809_s...-ton_6x6_truck -Which they didn't like so they then produced this truck: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M939_Truck -WHICH they STILL don't like, it has safety issues!!! Which is how we got these in the first place. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family...tical_Vehicles https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medium...le_Replacement ------------------------ Even more fun!!!! -A humvee: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humvee#Expanded_capacity -Costs half as much as this MRAP: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oshkosh_M-ATV -The U.S. army unleashes a replacement program for the Humvee, which is supposed to LOWER the costs of MRAPS: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JLTV -GEE, the winner looks almost the same as the M-ATV doesn't it? Well, it costs almost exactly the same too!!!: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oshkosh_L-ATV -It's gotten so bad, the U.S. army actually was trying to delay buying them and stay with unarmored Humvees. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humvee...cement_process |

Anyways, the Hemtt, LVs and another truck are known as Dragon Wagons,
as their nicknames. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon...disambiguation) Long ranged, high mileage, slower trucks apparently. Heavy duty lifting aircraft etc. Apparently it's not enough to have the previous trucks, there's actualy TRACTOR trucks too. Mostly they are designed to pull tanks since if you can pull a tank, you can pull almost anything. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oshkos...nt_transporter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_...M746/M911/M747 German/ polish equivalent vehicle https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SLT_50_Elefant Canada and Singapore use militarized Mercedes Benz Actros trucks https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merced...itary_variants Current British tank puller truck https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DAF_XF Knock urselves out, with this link, The Russian truck is listed in there too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catego...k_transporters Also, the military uses ballast trucks for heavy lifting. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballast_tractor |

Also here's a list for fun truck types if you ever needed to know what all those half van half trucks or trucks that look like boxes are, etc and so on.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truck_classification If it isn't obvious, I am obsessed with trucks and utility vehicles. |

It is pretty nuts. A big part of the problem is that every minor variant gets a different Line Item Number in the supply system. If you read the TMs for a HMMWV - for example - it goes on for page after page describing vehicles that are basically identical. But someone goes and adds cup holders and the supply system has to come up with a new nomenclature for that specific variant.
As for the question of HMMWV vs MRAP, a lot of the debate surrounds what they actually expect the vehicle to do. The Humvees were never intended to be the primary patrol vehicle for counterinsurgency and urban warfare. They got forced into a role they weren’t designed for, so things like armor upgrade kits got applied as an ad hoc solution (and significantly reduced the life of the vehicle). The problem with purchasing a replacement is the question of whether we want a combat vehicle or a FOB runner. If I expect the vehicle to go into combat I need something like a MATV. If I just want a cargo truck to move troops and supplies on the camp, then I need a HMMWV. It would be a gigantic pain in the ass if we had to fire up the MRAP every time we wanted to go to the chow hall. |
