There's a lot already listed I really enjoyed, but I tried to narrow it to top 5 of each system & games we actually owned back then and not borrowed. There's a ton more of the original Nintendo I loved along with many original PlayStation(if that counts as retro now). Never had a Sega at all back then and didn't have very many Super Nintendo games then either. I still have most all of systems and games from way back, but haven't played them in many years. Last time I tried any of them, I had the some of the same feelings Kuh_Rupt mentioned. Anyway, here's my list in no particular order...
Atari 2600: Pac man Defender Joust Spider Fighter Missile command Nintendo: Metal Gear Mike Tyson's Punch Out Excitebike Contra Gun.Smoke Super Nintendo: Shadowrun Mortal Kombat 2 Street Fighter II Star Fox Super Double Dragon Playstation: Resident Evil 1 & 2 Desert Strike Tekken 3 Twisted Metal- 1, 2 & 3 Metal Gear Solid If I had to choose one game overall I got the most frustrated with as a kid, it would have to be Bases Loaded for Nintendo. I've never encountered such a game that seemed to suddenly cheat you out of nowhere.

Resident Evil and Tekken 3 were some bad ass games for playstation. Those and twisted metal were probably my favorites.

Well, technically I guess I was an adult back then when I bought a Super Nintendo & first PlayStation. I had to eventually buy a second PlayStation due to a dumb ass friend of my sister pouring a glass of tea on it. She half assed cleaned it up and didn't tell me about until I tried to turning it some time later, then it was just a quick sizzle and a puff of smoke. My original Nintendo had an adventurous life. My first vehicle at 16 was a Mazda pickup I was constantly messing with. I got one of those portable CRT TV's(like a 4" screen but the rest it was still huge) for Christmas one year then cut and crammed it flush into the front of the glove box somehow and later realized the Nintendo would work off of 12v. It stayed in there for a few years then in a different truck a couple of more. It traveled many miles & the damn thing still worked the last time I hooked it up. It probably still does. Those things were built like a tank.

Yeah fun times with those. I could probably still play Twisted Metal now, but I bet I wouldn't be able to stand the graphics(or terrible voice acting)of Resident Evil for too long nowadays. I think I probably played Tekken 3 on an arcade machine more often than the PlayStation. It was always one the favorites to play with friends. That, Street fighter & Mortal Kombat.

I've never been much of a PC gamer--I prefer the user-friendliness of consoles--but I have to make an exception for the original Doom games. Heavens, I love those games. So hard. So much so I even managed to get id Software on my resume, even if it didn't turn into much of a career move. I actually help moderate a smallish community site dedicated to providing resources to modern Doom modders, though admittedly I don't do as much modding/mapping as I probably ought to.
I do like Duke Nukem a lot; I played the side-scrollers before it went 3D, and own the second one on floppy somewhere. Not to mention Duke 3D and probably half-a-dozen of the various spinoffs/pseudo-sequels. I even spent $100 on the Duke Nukem Forever Balls of Steel edition, which I should probably be ashamed of, but I'm not. Favorites? One of my very favorites is Hexen, which is a slightly obscure relative to Doom, but with a dark fantasy theme and slightly more sophisticated gameplay. Beyond that, I like the Zeldas, Metroids, and Final Fantasys, though some of the recent games have gotten pretty far up their own asses. Spent way too much time collectively on the Elder Scrolls games, starting all the way back with Arena.
