I've long contended that we only stop buying toys because of a false narrative that toys are for kids. Most "adult" hobbies are no more legitimate, and often more expensive.

I'm a history major and I love history. I am not a reenactor but I do think it is kind of cool, but let's be honest, Civil War reenactors are just history Trekkies! How is their hobby any more or less nerdy than what we collectors do? |

Hobbies are obviously personal things and wholly dependent on what interests each individual. For example, in addition to my little toy collection, I also enjoy rebuilding old and unique motorcycles and cars. That's my thing and as I age, I find that toys and the cartoons/comics/pop culture connected to them interests me less and less. None of that is influenced by false narratives, it just is. |

I love when someone who plays video games constantly talks shit on us. They don't see that is literally the exact same thing we just sit up our toys and they have the television set their up for them in advance.

Nah, sorry, saying it's only a "false narrative" that causes people to lose interest in toys as they age is a "false narrative" in itself and implies that everyone would be an adult toy collector if it wasn't for some pesky stigma that toys are only for kids. The truth is, most people just simply "outgrow" toys, just as they outgrow thumb-sucking and comfort blankies and cartoons and Sesame Street. That doesn't mean some don't find some toys or cartoons plenty nifty, they just don't have the interest in owning/collecting them...and honestly, they don't find them interesting at all. Most adults don't think much about toys except when having to find one for their children.

I'm not saying people just don't lose interest. Sure they do. That isn't unique to anything. But how many of us stopped collecting at some point because we We're "too old"? Meanwhile, i think there's a number of hobbies that aren't stamped with that same stigma - video games being a prime example.
So, in the end, every hobby is subject to stigmas. You hear about "Harley/Musclecar Widows" often. Stamp & coin collectors are considered boring. Train & model guys are viewed with bemused tolerance. Artists are often seen as "fruity" or not-quite-right. Hell, I get the headshake when I reveal how much time I'll spend in the shop building a bike or trying to track down or fabricate parts. Christ, I've spent damn-near 60 hrs now just trying to get the dashtop out of a '61 T-Bird, and you just know that raises some eyebrows and rolls some eyes. It's just the way it is for people who don't share a passion. |

I recall spending every single weekend playing with GI Joes with my friends. Then I moved, and when I arrived in my new school the local kids were too cool for toys. And I was like, "Why? When did that decision get made? Nobody gave me that memo." But that feeling of inadequacy persisted for many, many years. I thought that these things were 'bad' and that I wasn't 'supposed' to like toys or comics. Eventually I started having depressive episodes and every few months I would punish myself by throwing away my things. (Toys, comics, video games... One time I even destroyed a brand-new PS2.) I kept thinking that if I got rid of these things then I would be a "real adult" and people would like me. Fast forward fifteen years, and I don't care anymore. I've spent more time than I would have liked in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, and those are years I will never get back. I'm now a CW3. You know what being a warrant officer is like? Ask anyone in the Army and they'll tell you: Chief does whatever the **** Chief wants. I'm at the point in my life where I don't have to *prove* anything, to anyone, for any reason. And if buying toys makes me happy, who are you to tell me I'm wrong? Last edited by solosam; 04-12-2017 at 05:09 PM.. |
