Well, meant to do this earlier today, but better late than never (It's 10:54 MST).
20 years ago today BATMAN starring Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson and Kim Bassinger opened. This was really my first time being involved with a summer blockbuster event. Before it opened I remember begging my parents to take me to see it but they told me it was too violent and I was out of luck. I vividly remember my dad showing up at my buddy Al's house that following Saturday where I was playing. I couldn't figure out what he was there for. He sent my brother to get me and then he told us he was taking us to see Batman! I was so excited I could barely stand it. Once we got to the theater, we took our seats and I will NEVER forget Elfman's Batman theme as it started. The low rumbling of the bass, the thunderous rising of the trumpets. I was hooked before the movie even started. What a thrill it was! The film opens with a couple of thugs getting the holy living hell beaten out of them, one punk cries in terror, "WHAT ARE YOU!?" and Keaton in all the coolness of a badass replies, "I'm BATMAN," and tosses the thug aside like a rag doll. If that wasn't the coolest opening to any movie I had ever seen in my ten young years, I don't know what was. To this day I still think the movie Batmobile is one of the most elegant and beautiful things I have ever seen. To me the curves were sexy, before I even knew what sexy was. The entire look of the film was stunning especially the design of Batman. It was epic. Nicholson indeed stole the show, his performance as the homicidal manic clown will go down as one of the great Hollywood villains. From his manic laughter to the unforgettable line when asked what he wanted, "my face on the one dollar bill." and after frying a gang lord rival to death, he states, "I'm glad you're dead!" That summer I rocked a black Joker T-Shirt and picked up the entire Toy Biz line of vehicles and figures. My friends, brothers and I spent hours chasing each other around the back yard reenacting all of the key scenes. One of my fondest memories was collecting the BATMAN trading cards, both series one and two. A few years ago I bought two unopened boxes of each series off ebay and I had a blast opening the packs and assembling complete sets. They now grace a 3 ring binder in my toy room. They even came with a stick of bubble gum, remember that? Not very tasty after nearly twenty years though. ;) All in all, the summer of BATMAN will remain one of epic excitement and fun. I'd love to hear what your BATMAN summer was like, way back in 1989.

That's the movie that dragged me away from only collecting Marvel's GI JOE & Transformer comics, and threw me headfirst into DC comics lore.
No matter how awesome the current Bat-flicks are, that one and Batman Returns will always hold a special place in my heart. |

I can remember sporting a Batman t-shirt that summer along with my spiked hair and mullett. I can remember collecting the drinking cups at Taco Bell. I believe that was the same year the cinnamon twist came out.
jaimanstone, that was interesting to read. Brings back some memories. |

Damn, I'm old. I remember I had just graduated from high school, and this was the most anticipated movie at that time. Everywhere you went, there was something that had the Batman logo on it. I was so pumped to see the movie. I saw it 2 or 3 times that summer, and was able to quote lines from it by the time I got to college in the fall. Ah, good times!

I remember when the movie came it was a big deal with all my friends. IOne of them even bought the rubber latex mask to wear around! I remember that thing cost a good chunk of change back then!
