I love cars but I am terribly inept when it comes to working on them or knowing certain things.
One thing I was thinking about was buying a new Ford Escape, and my brother-in-law was telling me something about a lift. From what I understand, it raises your car up higher. He couldn't tell me anymore than that, so I'm turning to you all. So, here are my questions: 1) Is it possible to do this to the Ford Escape? 2) How high will it make it go? 3) Will I have to get different tires? 4) Will it screw with my speedometer? 5) Will it screw with my gas mileage? I wish I had more knowledge, but cars just aren't something we had in abundance when I was growing up, so my dad didn't really teach me too much. I'd love to have a Camaro, but practicality dictates in my house right now! So I'm going to trick out an Escape the best that I can. Thanks for your help.

Lifted trucks are awesome. You can lift anything. My neighbor put a lift kit on a frickin' Monte Carlo. An escape would probably be sweet lifted. You can lift it as high as you want, just with different lift kits. You don't have to get new tires, but a few sizes bigger would look good. It MIGHT mess up your speedometer a little if you get bigger tires, but even if it does that's a pretty cheap/easy fix. Finally, it might bring your mileage down a little, but nothing too drastic unless you get monster truck tires on there.

How much does something like this normally cost?

How high were you thinking of lifting it? Anything over 4 inches will start to get really spendy. There are a few systems available. I know that you can just get spacers in your springs, but that won't be as high of quality as getting new springs. It will be cheaper though, and unless your planning on like rock climbing with this truck, I'd just go with the spacers. Try asking parts stores around you what they've got for your truck.

My first question would be "what part of the country are you in, and do you get snow there?"
Depending on how high you plan on lifting it, it will also raise your center of gravity, making the vehicle a bit less stable. (which is where the whole snow thing comes into play) |

Well, I have to make sure it fits in my garage, so it can't be too tall. What's sort of standard for a lift?

3 or 4 inches. It doesn't sound like a whole lot, but it looks like more once it's all done. Facehammer makes a good point. It will be top heavy and more prone to rolling, so if you get it too tall that's gonna be a danger. I definitely wouldn't go more than 4 if your gonna be driving in the snow.
