Saturday mornings started at 6am or just before (first there was the coloured lines / no signal, then the national anthem, and then it was off to the races). It usually ended with Star Trek, and then outside for the rest of the day.
I would get so pumped on Fridays in anticipation. Great thread... |

I'd get up before 700 and catch the tail end of Romper Room or Captain Kangaroo. I was lucky enought to catch the very last episode of the Captain. God how I loved watching the cartoons on Saturday morning. It fuelled my imagination for a weekend of playing..

Christmas and Saturday mornings were the only time I got up early as a kid.....usually about 5:30 they had the incredible Hulk on then Spider-man and his amazing friends. Other shows I liked were the Smurfs, Scooby-Doo, Looney toons, Ghostbusters, The Chipmunks, Laugh-olympics, flintstones, Batman, zorro, dungeons and dragons, foofur, gummie bears, the list goes on and on of shows I use to watch. Later in HS and college Sipderman and X-men. The only thing was I played soccer as a kid so I would miss a bunch of these until soccer season was over. My mom also did the breakfast thing too.....pancakes, bacon, sausage, grits, the whole nine yards....man I miss those days.
On Sundays before church I remember watching snorks, Air Raiders, Johnny Quest, Visionaries, Thudarr the barbarian, Voltron, Transformers, and that other cartoon where they all rode on zip lines, for the life of me I can't remember the name....they made toys too**** Sky Commanders**** found it (Before or After)School days consisted of G I Joe, Mask, Jetsons, COPS, Flintstones, Silverhawks, TMNT, Go-Bots, Thundercats, smurfs, He-Man, both versions of Ghostbusters, and Scooby-Doo...and who can't remember USA Cartoon Express Last edited by MSU44; 11-10-2009 at 06:11 PM.. |

I think it was NBC who first phased them out.....it went to Teen NBC or something like that were the shows became teen oriented and less (no) cartoons. It was like all Saved by the Bell and California Dreaming and shows like that.
I think they figured this generation of kids who watched the cartoons were growing up and let's cater to them, which in turn forced the other networks to do the same....which in turn was the death of network Saturday morning cartoons. The ones that are on today blow....we had it good, no great as children of the 80's. I really miss those days, cartoons in the morning and right before lunch Saturday morning wrestling...then the rest of the day either playing outside, or with my Joes while watching college football with my Dad and older brothers during the fall and winter!!! Speaking of the fall remember how the networks would have a special sneak preview of the new cartoons like the Friday night before the new seasons? Last edited by MSU44; 11-10-2009 at 06:13 PM.. |

All the good shows, GI Joe, Transformers, Voltron, M.A.S.K., Silverhawks, Thundercats, He-Man, She-Ra, Gobots, Wheeled Warriors, were on after school on the weekdays.
All the dumb goofy-ass baby shows that I couldn't stand were on Saturday morning. Like Smurfs, Q-Bert, Pac-Man & that type of shit. So I hardly ever bothered with Sat. morning. I hardly ever got up before noon. Anybody that lived up around Connecticut knows what I'm talkin about.

I remember back in the 80's checking out the TV Guide to see pictures for all the new cartoons that were coming out that season. Back then, before the internet,it was usually my first glimpses of what the shows looked like.

Always up by 6am at the latest. I'd be watching cartoons all morning and then Kung Fu at lunch time! It was a great time.
