I was at B&N tonight, and started looking at the Star Wars novels. There are a ton of them. I noticed that there are quite a few different writers also. Are all of these "official"? I mean, are they in harmony with the movies? Is there a certain order they should be read? Is this what is meant by "expanded universe"? I've read a 3 book series by a Zahn guy before that took place after RotJ. I wanted to to some more reading, but I wasn't sure where to dive in, so I figured some of my fellow Jpe fans were SW fans too and might be able to help me.

pretty much the first few pages have a timeline and show you when and where the book or any others are take place.

I'll link you over to a little fan work of mine that may help:
Star Wars: Message Boards: The Unofficial BCaT Timeline of EU Works All the novels are official, and more or less in harmony with the movies (some pre-episode-I works disagree on the date of the clone wars, Boba Fett's history etc, but in general, discrepancies are small. The trilogy by Zhan you read is known as The Thrawn Trilogy (or TTT) and is widely regarded as some of the best EU. (Yes, the novels, comics, video games, short stories, etc are what is known as the EU) EDIT: also, I have an album with images of the complete EU library in my profile. |

While widely popular among EU fans I think Zhan's writing gets bogged down in technical detail and doesn't flow as well as Oh saaaay Steve Perry's work. The trilogy itself came off as a badly written wrestling angle where the top heel refuses to job to the top babyface, instead opting to job to his buddy via screwjob. The good guys came up with plan after plan and Thrawn would figure it out on the very next page making the heroes look stupid. And don't get me started on the ending. I think these books got a boosted reputation because they paved the way for EU books, but IMO they're not as good as they're made out to be.

THey're not the best, but they are good.
Arguably Stover, Allston and Reeves write better novels, but given the time frame of the writing, TTT is excellent. |

Zahn's are the best. I didn't like Shadows of the Empire by Perry.
But yeah, like said, they are basically "canon". Lucas' people do an excellant job of making sure all the various stuff stays true continuity wise. There are even references to events in the comic books in some of the novels (you don't have to read the comics to get it, so don't worry). The pre-Episode 1 stuff is where it gets harder. For the most part that was unexplored and the novels/comics started filling it in. Then Lucas did the first 3 movies and kind of changed things that the books had established. But they aren't that big of differences. Karen Traviss' Republic Commando novels are good reads.

Zahn is hit or miss for me. I liked his original trilogy but really didn't like Outbound Flight.
