There's a lot of cliche and hokum in every genre...this is the end o' days, dontchaknow? We're out of original thought! Seriously though, thanks for the suggestions. I tried Jordan once, but couldn't get into it. Something about his writing style, IIRC, bored me. That was decades ago though, so I'll give him a second look.
And no worries about the advanced reader, I was just being a dick. However, chances are, if it's being pushed by a major house (I forgot to check for the publisher on your site), I'll end up with one anyway. And, no, I don't work in a B&N. EDIT: Oh, SFWP! Probably won't get one then...unless I ask around. Worse comes to worst, I'll buy the damned thing! And, yeah, The Dark Tower is worth the time. King just has one of those unique voices that remain so no matter how long he's been around, how much exposure his works receive or how much he's been copied. I agree that King has a distinctive voice that, when he is on his game, is so good I want to hate it. I think that the very first sentence of The Dark Tower series, for instance, has got to be on the shortlist of the very best opening lines in all of fantasy. It's just so perfect.

It's definitely up there on the list, and not just in the fantasy genre, but all of literature. Simple, to the point, but, boy, does it ever set a tone. |

It not only sets a tone, it introduces the protagonist and antagonist and fires the reader's curiosity about them, and it does it in 12 words. It's unbeatable.

True enough. It's masterful, it really is. I don't use that word lightly. King obviously took Twain's advice.

Man, it's cool to see discussion on The Dark Tower. Although, I guess I started in the prequel comics.

The only Conan novels I've actually read were those by Robert Jordan. I really should get around to the original Howard stuff one of these days. So much to read...
