All of you that still do auction style listings have my sympathies. I have been dealing on eBay since '99 and about 2 years ago began having so many non-paying bidders that I gave up and started using Buy It Now listings only and requiring instant payment. The down side is I have to try to not over price a listing or short change myself, but since the fees were changed to all be uniform its been worth it for me. From experiences I have had through the years eBay and Paypal both seem to be completely concerned with protecting the buyer and don't seem to care about having a seller's back at all if things go sideways.

There should not be ebay accounts with several no pays on their record. I understand not banning someone for one infraction, but if it happens again, especially twice in the same year, delete the account ebay.

I don't sell a ton of stuff on ebay. I usually sell a lot of stuff at once to thin out my collection or to get rid of other stuff I don't want anymore. I'm selling a lot right now but I think it's been a couple years since I last had sales. I have not had a lot of problems. I have my settings to not allow buyers with a certain amount of unpaid items (whatever the lowest amount is) and I have the UPI auto assist on. I also block tons of bidders. If you do anything even remotely shady you are on the list. Ebay definitely looks out for buyers more than sellers, but if you are professional and courteous they will help you out. I had a guy not pay and ebay opened a UPI automatically after 4 days. He immediately said he would not pay and if I went through with the claim he would leave negative feedback. I explained ebay policies to him and told him he was still able to pay and not have his account dinged. He said he was going to bid, not pay, and leave negative feedback on future sales of mine if the claim went through. The claim ended, I got my fees refund, and he followed through. I called ebay and they had the neg comment removed within an hour. I had added him to my blocked bidder list so I never heard another peep from him. I really wanted to go off on the guy, but it was my professionalism that made ebay side with me so easily.

Buy it Now is all I pretty much use too. The auctions either sell too low, or I get too many non-payments.

Yeah, some 0 feedback bidder won one of my Star Wars items. I gave him a week and he kept making excuses. Finally opened a case and got my fees back.
What sucks though is I can't even leave him negative feedback anymore to warn people. Ebay doesn't seem to care about sellers anymore. They seem content to keep bidders happy. We can't leave negative feedback as a seller but I think they can leave us negative feedback as a buyer.

eBay pretty much blows, but the only reason people still use it is because it is more or less the only option for what it is. It is pretty much a monopoly.
I guess you could say Amazon, but that's not really a good place to sell used stuff, and Amazon takes a bigger cut of the sales than even the eBay/Paypal combo. Your only other options after that are maybe Craigslist....or having a garage sale. Years ago, eBay was more in favor of the sellers, and a lot of buyers complained. eBay slowly changed their rules, policies, and regulations so that it eventually balanced out a lot more and was more fair for both parties. Unfortunately, they couldn't leave good enough alone, and further and further tipped the balance in favor of buyers, until everything pretty much collapsed for sellers. Like, 90% of the power lies in buyer's hands. It is stupid that you can't leave feedback for buyers other than positive. Also, if you get screwed over on a deal, or have to put up with a shitty buyer, they more or less just get a slap on the wrist, unless they start to accrue a lot of bad marks against them. For sellers, if you have just a couple screw ups, you can kiss a lot of your privileges goodbye. It is also waaaay too easy for a buyer to make bogus claims, resulting in the the seller losing their item, their money, and possibly having a mark on their account or whatever. And eBay almost always sides with the buyer, unless you have absolute, undeniable proof that the buyer is in the wrong. Sometimes, even having a tracking number and proof of delivery isn't enough to protect yourself if the buyer makes a claim that they never got their item. You can barely count on insurance from the carrier these days, and from what I remember, eBay recently changed their policy of how long a buyer can make a claim. It used to be 45 days, but now it is apparently 180 days, which is just outrageous. There is way more about eBay that is unfair for the seller, but it makes me mad just thinking about.

No-pays are a hassle, and you can get your fees back. All you lose is your time, not the item. The scenario I described was far, far worse and threatened to destroy confidence in online auctions.

Unless you do thousands of sales a year one negative can really mess you up. They need to change the system so its maybe not so black and white positive or negative. Maybe a 1-10 scale or something. Or maybe if you are going to submit a negative feedback score you have to submit a report to ebay. Even if ebay half ass looks at the report people might think twice before killing someones feedback score if it is "official", and it is really easy to spot the crazies. Sellers should be able to grade buyers even if it is not shown in their public feedback score.
