I've been thinking about this for a while and I figured I'd share my dreams with you guys...
I really want to open a toy store. I cannot do it now and it's only a dream. I also realize most small businesses fail, blah, blah, yadda, yadda... but it's a dream. I live in a pretty small town, but it's growing. We have plenty of restaurants, gas stations, car washes, auto parts, grocery stores, etc... but not one specialty toy/comic/game store. I've worked in a toy store before, stocking, selling and buying, etc... it was busy around the holidays and weekends... but the rest of the time it was just hanging out looking and rearranging the toys. I got pretty familiar with many lines, not just Joes or Star Wars when I worked there. It was pretty fun in retrospect. I think I could handle working at a toy store every day. I'd call it "Tooele Toys" of course. I'd move into the empty Blockbuster Video store next to the McDonalds... perfect location right off Main Street. Comics, toys, models, maybe a few video games... no loitering though!!! Buy something or get out! I could totally pull this off...

Thanks man, I gotta try to do something I enjoy.
Maybe start with a Facebook storefront... I dunno... getting started would be the most difficult part. I wouldn't even know where to buy stock. I'd have to ask someone already doing it and why would they give advice to a potential competitor? Hahaha...

My fiance has the same idea. She's often thought of buying a space to sell toys. Personally, I think it'd be great if you did it. Definitely worth seeing more toy stores, especially if they cater to collectors and have vintage items IMO. If you ever do have your own toy store, hopefully you'll have some portion of it online, I'd love to check it out!

I have actually debated starting a small resale store myself. Not toys, used furniture and what not. I know I can't do what im doing forever, my body can't physically take it as I age. I still got some years left, and really don't want to end up punching a clock somewhere tell I die when I'm done here.

Bumping this because I've been thinking more and more on it.
What sucks is all the naysayers in my life. They all tell me to be more positive, do something with my life, yet when I get all excited about a toy store, they turn into Debbie-Downers! That's why it's a dream and also a goal. You gotta work hard. I use Kokomo Toys as an example, they used to be in a tiny little converted house, now they have a nice store in downtown Kokomo, and the store looks nice (from their Facebook pictures, I've never been there.)

I've been running my online business for about 3 years now (Still work a normal 40hr job) but I love every minute I get to spend on the business. I look at all the items I sell as a part of my own collection, but I'm not necessarily attached to them.If that makes any sense. I would love to have my own store, but living on Long Island I wouldn't be able to afford a store much less depend on it as a stable income. Part of the reason I love having it online. So many people are able to see what I have to offer. If you are able to live your dream, go for it. |
