Well, I have not received money in ages on PayPal and did not realize they take a cut now too. So the question is, when buying and selling through venues like the BST lists here do you use "friends and family" which apparently is either no money skimmed or very little or "gifts and merchandise" where they take about 5.5% as a fee. Edit: I don't know how PayPal calculates the fee - one item sold was for $12 and 0.65 taken, another item was $11 and .62 was taken.
What is your thought process? Sellers Do you recommend or direct a buyer use "friends" in your instructions? (My wife just had this for a hobby of hers) Do you compensate in your pricing or shipping & handling for the fee? Do you reject the money if the wrong block is checked? (This happened to my wife when she sent money for merchandise) Buyers As a buyer do you do one over the other and why? (I never had paid much attention to it) Did you know that PayPal is taking a fee now? I noticed I had some sort of partial seller protection from PayPal... what are they protecting? USPS gorillas handling the packages, fraudulent funds being used? Not that I just had a large sum of money taken in fees but I did not realize changes had been made in some time and two transactions "taxed". Last edited by cardensb; 03-18-2014 at 07:20 PM.. |

I can't remember a time when paypal didn't take fees - otherwise they would have no way to make a profit and fail to remain a business.
I have no issue paying their fee - they provide me a service and for most transactions its negligible (about 3% I believe). If you send money as a gift to someone, and the money comes straight from your account (like cash) then there is no fee for either party. If you have to use a credit card to send the money as a gift then you pay the 3% fee. Downside is you don't really have the buyer protection under this structure I believe. If you send it for a service, the seller pays the fee from his end (its transparent to the buyer). Also, the buyer is protected if the seller doesn't deliver. Another plus of this (for me as a seller) as the address for shipping is included in the payment and paypal's tools allow for easy purchase of postage and printing of labels at home via their multi-order shipping tool. Except for rare circumstances, I would rather a buyer pay me through the proper channels (not as a gift) so I can easily print the postage and label and save a trip to the post office. |

Lot of sellers on here sometimes states that you have to pay for the 3% fee on top of what you pay them.

If I'm paying for a trade, I typically send the money plus the paypal fee (using this calc: The Fee Calculator - Calculates PayPal service fees and charges).
If I'm trading with a trusted individual, I typically send the funds as a gift so that there is no cost to either party included. If I'm receiving funds from a trade/sale, I typically request that funds be sent as a gift. If the person is uncomfortable, then I ask them to include the PayPal fees. Although some might say that fees are the responsibility of the seller (and in most cases, I agree)...neither party in a trade should be responsible for absorbing fees if there's nothing to be gained by either party on a monetary level. |

every single person ive purchased from besides ebay, has requested me to send it as sending money to friends or family. they avoid the fee. it has always charged me a fee to send it. I have always been very uneasy about doing this, no buyer protection from doing it this way. so beware!!!

They've had the fees forever, the newer one to me is that they charge 2% on Ebay sales. I don't do to many transactions outside of Ebay, but will send as friend if under a certain dollar amount.

2.9% of the total plus .30 cents. Been this way since I started selling in the late 90's.

I never trust even my friends that much when money is involved. Use PayPal, and tell the seller that you are willing to pay the 3% fee.
The only people I trust to not use PayPal with are online stores that take credit cards, where I'm protected by low credit card limits and precautions. |

I guess I have never paid attention to the fees until last night after using it for years to send payments. I wonder if it had to do with me set up to a bank account since there would not be a VISA charge?
I knew they charged a fee if I withdrew money but never for the digital transfer. |
