Is the USA's obsession with the military a fad? I think everytime we look around there is something about the military. If a marine is doing something cool it seems like someone says "Man marines are bada$$" even though a lot of non marines prob could do it. Same with other branches. The military has done great things such as fighting World War II,etc. The list goes on and on. However, sometimes I wonder why people say they make sacrifices when in all honesty I don't know if they really sacrifice anything. They did make the decision to go in. Its not like we are short on troops and need them so they sacrificed to do what was needed. Not trying to slap the military in the face or down someone cause they are in it,etc. Hell my dad was in the marines and fought in Vietnam. I sometimes just think about this cause I never really saw the point of the Iraq war which I could go on and on about and the Afghanistan war. I guess I just dont understand why someone would want to go and fight someone elses war for something like money or oil were they could die cause this politician wants to get money from a guy that owns a company that will make a ton of money if the country goes to war.
Others chime in?

Two things are on my mind about this. First, yes it is volunteer, but like Police, Fireman, and paramedic jobs-- being in the military is dangerous and stressful. People recognize it more easily for the danger than say miners and oil platform workers, and so forth. Plus the above 4 mentioned are government Jobs and therefore more highly visible in the public eye.
Second, I think there was a reverse done in the late 80s and early 90s by Americans knowing full well that a very dark and unsavory thing was done to Vietnam veterans. I think the 180 degree turn happened in desert storm, and to an even greater degree after 9/11. Americans wanted no part of being negative around troops ever again. So, I don't think it is a fad. I think it is more of an acknowledgement of " Hey, thank you for your sacrifice or your service" being spoken today is a way of saying sorry to the Vietnam vets-- in a way. A way of healing a social scar as it were. This is not scientific--just a personal insight and feeling. **Edit..I also think if you have criticism of the Military leadership or motivations you are seen as somehow being negative towards the soldiers. So, people tend not to be critical in a politically correct sense. I don't think it is hyperbole when Bush said "You are either with us or with the Terrorists." I think many outspoken American leaders still feel this way, and the public still feels this way.

Being deployed is a big sacrifice. Huge gamble. Any day you could wake up to a mortar shell in your bunk. You do sacrifice family time and your life goes on hold as you perform your duties in the deployment. You see some really twisted stuff that changes you for worse. Old army saying, many come back, but few come home.
The armed services are branches of the political tree. Sure maybe some nobility may be missing from more current combat actions, but do not doubt honor or other values have been deserted. The military is always in the public eye, therefore always kept in relevancy. It's not so much an obsession, but some civilians have probably hit deeper thoughts than even I have, and know the true value and had their respect earned from soldiers traditions of the past carrying into the future.

Obsession or appreciation?
I like to think it's the latter, it isn't a fad, and it's due to the pervasive appreciation for our soldiers' sacrifices. Quote:

Others chime in? sigh That is just a very tired bit of putrid politics.

We don't do enough for our soldiers (and their families), police or firemen to recognize their duty and sacrifice.
Sacrifice doesn't mean just your life, it means everything else you give up.

Police and Firemen I get that cause always have a need for that.
However, with the military there isnt a need for it so to speak like 50 years ago. Its just my opinion that neither the Iraq or Afghanistan war was needed. If the country was attacked and was needed Im sure people would jump at it to defend it cause then it would be a need. Maybe its just me as not see the wars we are fighting now as being necessary.
