This rant is about the commercial "gift" buying. I was fine with Black Friday as long as it was on Friday. Friday, like every other day, start at 12:00 am, midnight, or 0 Zero Hundred Hours. Now it has invaded Thanksgiving. The stores will open on Thanksgiving day. All of the employees will have to miss out of this holiday because they are first getting ready to work and then having to show up before the stores open. So Thanksgiving is just another day of work. And I know too many people are there buying "gifts" for no one else but themselves.
Secondly, the Christmas stuff takes over the Halloween decorations before Oct.31. Some stores started to corral the Halloween stuff into a clearance section one week before Halloween. So that was Oct. 24 but the Clearance price was still 95% of the regular price so no big saving there. Finally there is a Kroger's in Indy that was playing Christmas carols the Thursday before Labor Day. So since the Christmas season started 2 months ago I am already over it and it is time to pack in all the trees and lights and inflatable Santas and put it all away. Besides I have not seen any proof there will be new Joes out for this Christmas. Last edited by C.I.A.D.; 12-06-2013 at 08:26 PM.. Reason: No religious discussion at. all. |

So basically you hate the Holidays because G.I. Joe toys aren't flooding the stores?
I understand, Holidays doesn't mean squat to me anymore. It's been ruined by corporate bull$#!+ just trying to get more money out of our pockets. My family doesn't even give gifts anymore for Christmas. We just spend the day together with a big dinner my mom makes. With my Mom's birthday on Nov 29th, my Dad's on Jan 3rd and me spending all year buying toys, why do I need Christmas for? This whole Black Friday sales starting Thanksgiving evening is complete total bull$#!+. Should be spending it with our families, not working to make CEOs pockets fat.

No employees can ask off for Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Dec. 22nd, 23rd, or 24th. Period. What is the point of Black Friday if your sale happens on Thursday?

I agree that having the stores open on TG and Christmas day is ridiculous.
I still love Christmas time and I always will, for many, many reasons--and even more so that I have a son. I enjoy buying gifts for people and, of course, receiving them. It's fun. But it's not the point. Even if you aren't religious, which I'm not, Christmas is just a good time when it's cold outside, the world smells like peppermint, and I don't feel as bad eating chocolate for 3 meals. No, I still feel bad about that. But you know. |

Just FYI guys -
9. No discussion on abortion or religion. As with politics, these topics are guaranteed flamefest generators; as such, debate/discussion on them is not allowed anywhere on here. Holiday cheer threads to express "Merry Christmas," "Happy Easter," etc. are permitted. Within those threads, posts that pursue avenues of religious debate/discussion will be removed. |

Not only does it suck having to work retail on holidays, but those days are usually the busiest so you have to deal with rude customers non-stop all day. When I used to work in retail back in the day, that was the worst aspect of it, not the holiday part. Lines twenty people deep, everybody annoyed because all the good stuff is already gone, people trying to take advantage of the crowds to steal, etc. It's easy to lose faith in humanity while working retail.

I would probably shop more at a place that REFUSED to be open on Thanksgiving. I know I don't shop on those days. I've been yelled at, shoved, flipped off... not worth it.
I have to work the entire weekend because some corporate genius decided to run our annual inventory the following Monday and I'm an inventory prep coordinator. Yay for me, not!

I spent 17 years with a mega retailer. I hated every single holiday. I remember the year before I left having to hold special meeting and tell people we were going to stay open 3 hours later on Christmas eve. Isnt that a happy holiday! Screw you and your family we want more sales!! And the worst part was customers were begging to come in even after we were closing and wouldnt leave. Made us close even later!

On TV, you have all these specials airing, promoting peace, unity, brotherhood, and kindness.
Meanwhile at Walmart... 69 year old grandmothers cursing in a language not heard since The Exorcist, Ghetto folks fighting over a heavily discounted item, Cops are present to break them up... We have seen in the past, people trampled to death and when the store shuts down so the dead/injured can be attended, the other customers break out torches and pitchforks. this kind of behavior destroys my faith in humanity. To hear someone standing in line tell the person in front of them, "Happy Holidays! God Bless you, too!" and the moment the cashier starts to ring up that XBox for $129.00, these same two are yelling, "Bitch, stop crowding me or i'll cap yo' ass." I prefer Thanksgiving and Christmas to be spiritual- not so much religious- observations. Nothing brings me peace and a good overall feeling just standing outside in the cold, listening to the wind or the random sounds off in the distance. this commercialized, gladiatorial bullshit, you can keep it.

Working for Toysrus was absolutely horrible during the Christmas season. It's amazing how much it's changed within the past 5 years or so. I started their in 2006, We opened at either 4am or 6am on Black Friday and we closed at 6 pm Christmas Eve. I quit in 2012, but in 2011 We opened Thanksgiving night at either 8 or 9, and closed at 10pm on Christmas Eve.
The holidays were never the same since I've worked in retail. I do 90% of my shopping online anyway, mainly because I work from 8-5 and M-F. So there is no way you will get me to go shopping on the weekends during Christmas time. |
